As a lifelong Pokémon enthusiast who’s been collecting cards since the good old Base Set days, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the return of Trainer’s Pokémon! Remembering those days when we had gym leaders’ and iconic trainers’ personal Pokémon in our decks is like diving into a nostalgia time machine.
In early 2025, two classic elements from the inaugural days of the Pokémon Trading Card Game are making a comeback. Recently, The Pokémon Company has revealed their plan to reintroduce the concept of Trainer’s Pokémon into the game, starting in 2025. Characters like Marnie, Lillie, and N were featured in a trailer for the returning Trainer’s Pokémon gimmick, with a hint at Team Rocket’s return as well. Importantly, the Pokémon Trading Card Game will still utilize Pokémon-ex cards, as demonstrated in the first trailer showcasing some of the new cards. You can watch the trailer displaying these cards below:
As a seasoned Pokémon trainer, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement as my trusted Pokémon companions make their grand return to the world of the Pokémon Trading Card Game! Prepare for an unparalleled journey filled with powerful bonds and epic encounters. The adventure is set to begin soon!

In the world of Pokémon, each trainer has their own unique Pokémon team. These are the creatures owned by popular figures like gym leaders or other well-known trainers from the franchise. Usually, these Trainer’s Pokémon work harmoniously with either Trainer or Stadium cards associated with their owners. However, Owner’s Pokémon have been rare in regular releases since the XY phase of the game began, and even then, it was a special occasion. But recently, a retailer listing from Japan hinted at the return of Trainer’s Pokémon, and it’s also been announced that Steven Stone will be one of the trainers featured in future sets.
The news seems to point towards a later 2025 launch for “Pokemon Legends: ZA”, the upcoming game in the Pokemon series. There was no reference to this game during the Pokemon World Championships, suggesting that if it were planned for an early 2025 release, we would have probably been given a sneak peek at a Mega Evolution teaser instead.
Besides sharing updates about the popular Pokemon Trading Card Game, The Pokemon Company also confirmed that the mobile app version, titled Pokemon Trading Card Game: Pocket, will be available starting October 30th. This new application introduces exclusive digital cards and a streamlined rule system for the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The simplified rules are designed to encourage swift gaming sessions and enjoyable experiences.
