Pokemon VGC Competitors Apparently Aren't Told in Advance About Scarlet and Violet Distributions

As a seasoned gamer with decades of Pokémon adventures under my belt, I must say I find it intriguing how The Pokémon Company and Game Freak are incorporating real-life competitive players into their games. It’s like having a piece of gaming history right at our fingertips!

As a devoted player of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, I’ve been fortunate enough to snag some unique Pokemon through Mystery Gift distributions, particularly ones modeled after the choices made by competitive gamers. Recently, I managed to get my hands on a Gyarados similar to the one used by Melvin Keh, the 2023 Singapore National Champion, who’s known as “Shaman” in VGC circles. In a recent episode of A Wild Podcast Has Appeared, ComicBook’s official Pokemon podcast, we had an engaging chat with Shaman, and he shared that he found out about his Gyarados distribution at the exact same time as us fans!

According to the Shaman himself, after he triumphed at the 2022 Nationals, The Pokemon Company inquired about his preferred Pokemon from his squad, which he thought he responded with Ice Rider Calyrex. However, no action seemed to have been taken regarding this choice, and he presumed the plans had been abandoned. In the subsequent year, Shaman emerged as the 2023 Singapore National Champion in an online tournament. Interestingly, he was not asked the same question on this occasion, and he was taken aback when the distribution details were unveiled in May 2024.

“Shaman chuckled, saying he hadn’t been given any prior information. However, he found it neat anyway. If given the choice of a single Pokemon, he’d opt for something other than Gyarados.”

In recent months, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have seen several distributions inspired by the Video Game Championship (VGC), including one featuring Shaman’s Gyarados. Previously in May, the game showcased a distribution centered around Flutter Mane, similar to the one used by Shin Yeo-myeong, the 2023 Senior Division Pokemon Trainers Cup Champion. In June, there was a Talonflame distribution modeled after the one used by the 2023 Japan National Champion @UB_Slow, and a Porygon2 distribution based on the one used by Nils Dunlop, winner of the European International Championships.

It’s uncertain if any of the other professional Pokemon players received advance notice regarding the distribution of rare Pokemon. Managing communication, handling requests, and ensuring compatibility with previously planned distributions might have been logistically challenging. Moreover, many of these distributions come with short redemption periods, so it’s plausible that competitive players found out after the promotional events had ended. Nevertheless, understanding the process behind how Game Freak and The Pokemon Company manage these distributions is intriguing.
