James Carter Cathcart, a well-known English dubbing voice actor who was famed for his roles in the Pokémon and Yugioh anime series, has tragically passed away at the age of 71. Voice actress Erica Schroeder announced his death on Instagram, with TMZ reporting that he died from complications related to throat cancer. After the final English dubbed episode of the original Pokémon anime aired, Cathcart decided to retire due to health issues caused by his cancer. Known by his alias Jimmy Zoppi, Cathcart was one of the longest-serving voice actors in the Pokémon series, having voiced the character Gary Oak since its debut.
Among a handful of actors, he was one who continued with the show following The Pokémon Company’s decision to change voice actors in 2006. He took over roles previously held by Eric Stuart (as James from Team Rocket) and Maddie Blaustein (as Meowth), while also assuming Stuart Zagnit’s position as Professor Oak. Additionally, he contributed to the scriptwriting of the Pokémon series for several seasons. Apart from his work on Pokémon, Cathcart was particularly recognized for his role as Weevil in Yu-Gi-Oh!, and for providing voices in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Sonic X, and the 4Kids dub of One Piece. According to recent reports, he leaves behind a spouse and other loved ones.
James Carter Cathcart Was The Most Prominent Pokémon English Voice Actor
James Carter Cathcart held a special place in the hearts of many within the anime dubbing community, particularly among Pokemon enthusiasts. Known as one of only a few original Pokemon voice actors still on the show since its beginning, he garnered a loyal fanbase who rallied around him following his cancer diagnosis and retirement. Beyond his work in voice acting, Cathcart was also musically gifted, showing exceptional skills as a pianist. He was a familiar face at conventions and Pokemon fan events. The community and those who adored him will deeply miss him.
Over time, several prominent voice artists from the initial Pokémon anime series have sadly passed away. Notably, Rachael Lillis, who voiced both Misty and Jessie, died in 2024; her demise was widely shared on social media platforms, with The Pokémon Company issuing a statement about it. Similarly, Maddie Blaustein, the original voice actress for Meowth, passed away in 2008. Fortunately, Eric Stuart, who initially gave voice to James before Cathcart assumed the role, is alive and in good health.
I’m deeply saddened by the loss of James Carter Cathcart, fondly known as Jimmy Zoppi. My heartfelt condolences extend to his beloved family and all those who were fortunate enough to know him personally. May you find peace in this difficult time, Jimmy. You will forever be remembered.
