Tonight, the BBC is celebrating the 10th anniversary of their successful Poldark remake re-airing the first episode, and they’ve also included a thoughtful discussion with scriptwriter Debbie Horsfield as bonus content.
Drawing inspiration from the historical novels penned by Winston Graham and initially brought to life on-screen during the 1970s, this engaging series chronicles the life of Ross Poldark, a war veteran from the American Revolution, as he reclaims his family’s estate in Cornwall. (Aidan Turner portrays the titular character.)
In that setting, he endeavors to recreate his former lifestyle, employing the aid of maid Demelja (portrayed by Eleanor Tomlinson from The Outlaws). A swift and passionate romantic relationship develops between them.
This critically-acclaimed drama spanned an impressive 5 seasons and 43 thrilling episodes, airing from March 2015 to August 2019. This year’s milestone anniversary makes it an ideal time to revisit this captivating series all over again.
Tonight, July 9th, 2025, Poldark season 1 episode 1 will be broadcast on BBC Four at 10:20 PM. Prior to this, from 10 PM, there will be a 20-minute discussion with screenwriter Horsfield, providing an inside look into the creation of the daring reinterpretation.

In 2015, Aidan Turner’s captivating performance as Ross Poldark left many viewers’ hearts pounding. This was largely due to the skillful writing and production work of Debbie Horsfield, whose modern adaptation of the BBC’s ’70s series garnered widespread acclaim and high ratings.
In this post, Debbie recounts the journey behind the creation of the series, highlighting the hurdles faced when revitalizing Winston Graham’s cherished Cornish tale for contemporary viewers.
Currently, Horsfield is delving into another challenging adaptation project, as she prepares for the release of her five-part series titled “The Forsytes,” inspired by the timeless novel “The Forsyte Saga” written by John Galsworthy.
Similar to Poldark, this piece too boasts a long and captivating history on television screens. It was first adapted into a popular BBC series during the 1960s, and later made a successful comeback as an ITV drama in the early 2000s. Notably, it featured Damian Lewis, known for his role in Wolf Hall, and Gina McKee from Bodyguard.
In this adaptation by Horsfield, the writer of Poldark collaborates again with Eleanor Tomlinson, alongside Millie Gibson from Doctor Who, Jack Davenport from The Morning Show, and Stephen Moyer known for his work in True Blood, to name a few notable figures involved.
