Everyone’s currently excited about Highguard, but early player reactions suggest that excitement might not last.
The game that ended The Game Awards 2025 was famously revealed on the recommendation of the show’s host, Geoff Keighley.
The new free-to-play shooter is finally available! It’s attracting players with its interesting mix of a fantasy world and fast-paced shooting. Plus, you can even ride a bear!
As history shows, live service games need to be incredibly popular from the start, or clearly demonstrate the potential for long-term success. Unfortunately, based on what players are saying online, Highguard doesn’t seem to be meeting those expectations.
We think the game is okay, and it could become really good, but being just okay isn’t usually enough to succeed in a crowded market.
Will people enjoy this game enough for it to succeed? It’s hard to say – plenty of games have stayed popular with less initial buzz – but we can discuss that later. Right now, we’re more interested in hearing if you’ve had a chance to play it yourself.
