Poll: Five Years of PS5 – How Would You Rate Sony’s Console?

The PlayStation 5 is officially five years old, having become available in the US, Europe, and most other major markets in 2020.

After five years with the PlayStation 5, we’re curious to get your honest opinion about the console.

Did this console deliver on what was promised? Were the games enjoyable enough? With talk of the PlayStation 6 already starting, how much longer can we expect this current console to be supported?

It’s true these are complex questions, as this console generation has been noticeably inconsistent.

It’s easy to remember the difficult launch of the PS5, largely due to the pandemic. Production was severely impacted, forcing Sony to make major changes to how they operated. For the first two years, the PS5 really struggled to gain momentum.

Despite the high demand and frequent sell-outs, the console proved its power with impressive exclusive games like the Demon’s Souls remake, Returnal, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

However, the slow release of new games from PlayStation Studios soon drew criticism. Major developers like Naughty Dog hadn’t announced any new titles – aside from several updated versions of The Last of Us – and Sony’s focus on ongoing live service games upset many fans. These fans remembered the success of the PlayStation 4, which had prioritized large, story-driven, single-player games.

It’s a frequent complaint with this generation of games, but the entire industry has faced big challenges since the pandemic. Increasing development costs and the pressure to constantly update games with new content have unfortunately led to the downfall of several companies.

The last five years have been a mix of challenges and successes, but the PlayStation 5 has remained consistently popular despite some disagreements about it. It’s shaping up to be one of Sony’s best-selling consoles ever, and continues to generate significant profits for the company.
