Last week, Sony surprised PlayStation fans by releasing God of War: Sons of Sparta on PS5, following its announcement at the State of Play event.
I’m really excited about Sons of Sparta! It’s a 2D Metroidvania game that lets you experience Kratos as a teenager, showing how he trained and became the incredible Spartan warrior we all know. It’s cool to see that part of his story!
The game has an intriguing idea, but reactions are mixed. Reviews are generally positive, though not outstanding, and players seem to feel the same way – it’s decent, but doesn’t really stand out.
Honestly, I’ve been hearing from other players that the game’s price feels a bit high, especially when you consider how many really good Metroidvania games are already out there on the PS5. It just feels like there’s a lot of competition, and maybe it doesn’t quite stack up value-wise.
Our review of God of War: Sons of Sparta for PS5 found both positive and negative aspects, ultimately giving it a score of 7 out of 10 – a ‘good’ rating.
We found it to be a largely successful attempt. The game’s design, borrowing from the ‘Metroidvania’ style, fits well with how the game plays, and it captures the look and feel of the series.
The game starts slowly, and it takes a while to become truly engaging. The beginning feels less developed than the more enjoyable and fulfilling experience you get later on.
Overall, we found this game to be a rewarding experience for fans of the series, offering a unique and deeper look into Kratos’s past – just be prepared for a few imperfections along the way.
