Pop culture backer Slash Labs brings crypto credit card to Japan

As a seasoned crypto investor with a keen interest in cross-border collaborations and pop culture, I find this news of a cryptocurrency-backed credit card from Slash Vision Labs particularly intriguing. Having closely followed their journey with Chiitan Coin, a memecoin inspired by the adorable baby fairy otter mascot of Kochi Prefecture, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what’s to come.

Through a recently sealed agreement with a Japanese credit card provider, Slash Vision Labs plans to introduce a credit card backed by cryptocurrency in Japan. Additionally, Slash Vision Labs is involved in the process of integrating Japanese intellectual property into the decentralized web, often referred to as Web3.

Information regarding the upcoming Slash Card is limited. The company behind it remains unidentified, though they’ve hinted at collaborations with SoftBank Payment and Visa’s partner, LifeCard, as mentioned in their official announcement.

As stated on the Slash Payment site, their existing payment system is compatible with a wide range of cryptocurrencies and functions across ten different blockchains. Additionally, they have created an enticing reward scheme called the Slash Card program.

“With the launch of Slash Card, Slash is making cryptocurrency payments more accessible while offering unique opportunities for both global and domestic crypto projects to engage with users in Japan via ‘Pay-to-Earn’ airdrops and more.”

According to Slash, the card will adhere completely to all relevant Japanese laws regarding cryptocurrencies and payments, and it is expected to debut in the year 2025.

Based in the British Virgin Islands, Slash is backing the promotional and operational endeavors of Chiitan Coin (CTAN). This memecoin was created as an official tribute to the beloved baby fairy otter mascot of Kochi Prefecture (or some sources say the city of Susaki), and it made its debut in June.

In August, Slash announced they’d entered into a strategic partnership with CTAN, which now gives them ownership over the project. Their goal is to create a brand-new genre known as “Mascot Meme.

Crypto and Japanese pop culture

Starting in November, Slash started offering payment solutions for Comilio, a site where users can post manga. Here, users can upload their manga content and charge points, which are bought using cryptocurrency via Slash, to view the content.

Slash Vision Labs launched its SVL governance token in May.

In August, the Japanese cryptocurrency platform DMM Crypto joined forces with Progmat, a Japanese stablecoin provider, to draft a plan for a stablecoin specifically designed to operate within DMM.com’s Seamoon Protocol and complement the SMP coin issued by DMM.

The Seamoon Protocol granted entry to the Seamoon Portal, a platform offering games and anime from DMM.com, a Japanese e-commerce and online service provider. However, in November, the Seamoon Protocol was terminated due to “significant shifts in the business landscape that posed difficulties for maintaining the project’s longevity.
