After 50 years, the Japanese show Super Sentai, which originally inspired Power Rangers, has ended. However, Power Rangers will continue with a new series planned for Disney+. The Power Rangers franchise recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, which is currently the last installment released. A reboot is now being developed, though details about what fans can expect are still unknown.
After months of rumors, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shot, the showrunners behind the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, have officially confirmed they’re developing a new Power Rangers reboot for Disney+. With both Super Sentai and Power Rangers currently open for fresh ideas, this is a great time for a reboot, as fans are likely to be receptive to a new approach.
Power Rangers Fans Should Be Used to Reboots, But Also Hate Change
A common frustration for long-time Power Rangers fans is the resistance to new ideas. While the show constantly reinvents itself with each season and a new team, it traditionally used footage from the Japanese show Super Sentai. Because of this, fans of Super Sentai often want to see direct adaptations of those shows, with the same concepts and visuals brought over to Power Rangers.
Hasbro’s Power Rangers Cosmic Fury was a unique attempt with their Netflix deal. The show introduced a fresh story, new Ranger suits, and original villains, while still drawing inspiration from the Japanese series Uchu Sentai Kyuranger (from 2017). However, much of the online discussion focused on what the show didn’t include from Kyuranger – things like the original suits, characters, and storylines – instead of appreciating Cosmic Fury for what it was trying to achieve.
As a long-time Power Rangers fan, it’s honestly not surprising to see elements from different Super Sentai series mixed in – it’s been happening since pretty much the beginning! Remember how Mighty Morphin started running out of footage from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger? That’s when they cleverly started incorporating bits from Gosei Sentai Dairanger (giving us the White Ranger!) and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (hello, ninja powers and Alien Rangers!). But for some reason, a lot of fans today are really unhappy about the show doing this now, which I find a little odd considering its history.
There’s Nothing Holding Back This New Era

Without the source material Super Sentai, the new Power Rangers series needs to stand on its own. It will likely revisit the original Mighty Morphin team to appeal to a new audience, which should address previous concerns about how closely it followed Super Sentai. This reboot won’t have another show to reference or be compared to, meaning it will be evaluated based on its own quality. Given how long ago the original aired, nostalgia won’t be a strong basis for comparison anymore.
Hasbro previously cancelled plans for a big Power Rangers universe, so this new series on Disney+ seems to be starting with a stronger foundation. It’s designed to properly introduce fans to a new era, and even critical fans will likely be happy to see a new Power Rangers show. With neither Super Sentai nor Power Rangers currently airing, fans are eager to welcome this fresh take on the franchise, whatever it may be.
Reviving a beloved show like Power Rangers is always a bit risky, but the franchise was actually created with reinvention in mind. Power Rangers has always adapted Super Sentai for a global audience, and now it’s turning that process inward. The show thrives when it builds on its own past, and this reboot has a better chance of success because it won’t be directly compared to the original Super Sentai series it’s based on.
