Power Rangers Reboot Needs to Start With the Evil Green Ranger If It Wants to Be a Disney+ Hit

A fresh Power Rangers series is being developed for Disney+, and it would likely succeed if it began by featuring the iconic villain, the Green Ranger. The Power Rangers franchise, which is over three decades old, and its original Japanese counterpart, Super Sentai, are currently on hold as plans for the future are made. This new series has a great opportunity to draw on some of the most popular and compelling storylines from the show’s history.

Reimagining Power Rangers is a big challenge, given the show’s extensive history. Instead of creating something completely new, the best approach would be to build on a well-known story to attract viewers. Starting with the famous ‘Green With Evil’ storyline would be a smart way to kick off a reboot and immediately capture audience attention.

The Green Ranger Is Power Rangers’ Biggest Icon

Some longtime fans might be tired of seeing so much focus on it, but Mighty Morphin Power Rangers should be the starting point for any new reboot. The key is to use the classic suits, characters, and concepts from the original seasons, but update them in a way that feels both fresh and recognizable. The 2017 Power Rangers movie tried this, but didn’t fully succeed because it strayed too far from what fans loved with its darker and more alien approach.

While it’s good to explore a more mature direction for the reboot, it’s important to maintain some familiar elements to attract longtime fans. The new Disney+ series seems geared towards a younger audience, around ages 10-13, based on potential casting choices. However, getting those fans’ parents to watch with them is crucial. Even after all this time, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers remains the most recognizable version of the franchise, largely thanks to its iconic characters—especially the Green Ranger.

I remember watching Power Rangers as a kid, and looking back, it’s hard to explain just how massive it was. It felt like it was everywhere. But for me, and for a lot of people, the show really took off when Tommy Oliver, played by Jason David Frank, arrived as the Green Ranger. It’s easy to forget now, with so many episodes in that first season, but Tommy was actually introduced pretty early on – he wasn’t a late addition at all.

The first season featured a five-episode arc called “Green With Evil” (episodes 17-21) that introduced a villainous Power Ranger who quickly became a fan favorite. This Ranger was initially more powerful and impressive than any seen before, easily defeating Megazords and even destroying the Power Rangers’ Command Center. He was also a skilled fighter with a unique weapon and Zord, and his charisma made him incredibly memorable – many fans remember the Green Ranger more vividly than the core Power Rangers themselves, even years later.

Power Rangers’ Reboot Needs to Start Strong

The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers had the benefit of a long run, allowing it to gradually introduce characters like Tommy and build anticipation. However, the new Disney+ series will be much shorter – only eight to ten episodes – and needs to grab viewers’ attention immediately. That means highlighting popular characters, especially the Green Ranger, in promotional materials to appeal to longtime fans and generate buzz on social media.

While the show could explore different ways to use him, a season largely centered around the ‘Green With Evil’ storyline would likely be very successful. The reboot could feature darker themes with a constant threat from an Evil Ranger, allowing the new team to develop as they fight against it. Including a couple of episodes with the original Power Rangers would be great, but the reboot needs to introduce this iconic villain quickly to capture and keep viewers’ attention, as people don’t have the patience for slow builds anymore.

Today’s television market is incredibly competitive, and Tommy Oliver represents a fresh, exciting direction for the Power Rangers franchise. Previous versions of the show eventually realized this, as Tommy’s story continued for much longer than his original Green Ranger character lasted in the Japanese series Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. Tommy went on to play multiple Rangers over many years, ultimately becoming the most recognizable star in the Power Rangers universe for decades.

It’s tough to explore Tommy Oliver’s story without Jason David Frank, but the new Power Rangers reboot really needs to embrace his legacy to succeed. Simply hinting at Tommy for a possible second season isn’t enough – a second season isn’t certain. The reboot should start with the Green Ranger playing a key role from the beginning, making a strong impression right away.

The possibilities for future seasons are exciting – perhaps he could return as the White Ranger, or they could introduce ninja or Zeo powers. To succeed on Disney+, the show needs to quickly grab viewers’ attention. What are your thoughts? Share them and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
