The 2017 Power Rangers reboot is often overlooked, but it offered a fresh take on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers story and introduced a new team. The film featured redesigned, more futuristic Ranger suits and Zords. While the suits looked amazing, one of the actors recently shared that wearing them was actually quite painful. To make matters worse, they faced an unexpected challenge during the costume process.
RJ Cyler, who played the Blue Ranger in Power Rangers, recently shared on The Joe Vulpis Podcast that while the Ranger suits looked great, they were actually quite painful to wear. He explained that stretching into the suit felt good visually, but the discomfort was intense. “It really killed my shoulders,” Cyler said, adding, “Oh, it kills.”
Cyler shared that the Rangers faced a surprising problem with their costumes. Although everyone had been measured beforehand, some of the actors grew during filming, which created an extra challenge for Cyler and the team.
Cyler explained that before the costumes were made, they did full body scans to get accurate measurements. But by the time filming started, everyone had either grown or gained weight. His suit, in particular, ended up being way too small – the opening was down at his belly button! Since it would take too long to remake, he had to just deal with the uncomfortable fit throughout filming.
The Power Rangers Costumes Were Difficult To Work With (And Even Harder To Take Off)

One of the problems with the costumes was that they had many layers, making them difficult to put on and take off. This was even more challenging during filming because the suits needed to be broken in and stretched out before they could be used properly.
The costumes were mostly made of rubber, and the actors had to break them in to make them comfortable. Cyler explained that the first two weeks of filming in the suits were incredibly difficult. They were so tight that the actors struggled to move, often needing help to sit or stand. It took an hour and a half to get into the suits, and another hour to get them off.
Cyler explained that the costume has five layers of clothing and accessories. Each layer has to be removed individually. He actually prefers the hair and makeup process, even though it requires standing for a long time. Even when putting on the helmet, he has to remain standing while it’s wired and the earpiece is fitted. There was a problem with Ludi’s earpiece, and because the helmet is difficult to remove, he couldn’t fix it quickly. The helmet itself has multiple layers: a rubber hood, and then three cloth hoods underneath to absorb sweat. A fan is also built inside the helmet.
Even though making the movie wasn’t easy, the cast created a really enjoyable film! You can now stream the 2017 Power Rangers reboot on Netflix.
