Okay, so I just saw Avengers: Doomsday, and honestly, Doctor Doom’s path to power felt a little too easy. The biggest problem isn’t Doom himself, it’s that the Avengers are incredibly fractured. We’ve got the New Avengers tangled up in a legal fight with Sam Wilson’s Captain America over who gets to be the Avengers – basically, whether reformed villains should share that title. The Fantastic Four could be a uniting force, but they’re reeling from their first encounter with Doom and aren’t exactly stable. And then you’ve got the X-Men, who are a total question mark. They’re powerful, sure, but I got the feeling they might end up being used as disposable heroes in this whole mess. It’s less a unified front and more a chaotic free-for-all, which really helped Doom’s chances.
Doom is entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe at a perfect time. Not long ago, the original Avengers team was still active, easily defeating every major villain they faced. But Doctor Doom presents a completely different level of threat. Here’s a look at how each of the original six Avengers would fare against him.
6) Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, is a consistently underestimated hero. Without superpowers, she fearlessly faces any threat, from robots to aliens. She’s a skilled fighter known for her speed and intelligence, and she’s just as valuable in planning missions, especially after the Avengers faced their biggest challenges. While Doctor Doom’s power is overwhelming, Natasha wouldn’t surrender without a fight.
5) Hawkeye

Clint Barton, much like his friend Natasha, doesn’t have superpowers like super strength or flight. But he’s an incredibly skilled archer – arguably the best in any reality – making him a valuable asset in a battle. Loki quickly discovers this in The Avengers when he becomes a target for one of Clint’s arrows. However, Doctor Doom won’t be fooled by the same tactics, particularly if he’s using magic. Clint’s best hope for survival might be his ongoing rivalry with Tony Stark, since his new enemy bears a striking resemblance to him.
4) Captain America

Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, has faced incredibly powerful villains like Loki, Ultron, and Thanos in individual battles and survived – a rare accomplishment for any hero. What truly defines Steve is his unwavering commitment to fighting against any kind of unfairness. However, even Captain America has his limits. He’s going to be featured in Doomsday, where he’ll likely confront Doctor Doom, but it doesn’t look like he’ll win. He’d be better served training the next generation of heroes.
3) Hulk

Hulk is comfortable with his role on the Avengers, enjoying the freedom to use his strength until he needs to rest. This works for him until he faces Thanos, who shows him that brute force isn’t everything. While Hulk is likely stronger than Doctor Doom, Doom’s superior intelligence will ultimately be Hulk’s weakness.
2) Iron Man

Tony Stark famously created his first arc reactor using only limited materials in a cave. He’s consistently proven to be the smartest person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, outsmarting everyone he encounters. However, Doctor Doom presents a truly unique challenge. Regardless of whether this Doom is an alternate version of another, Tony will finally meet an intellectual equal. Any strategy Tony devises, Doom is likely to counter – and even improve upon – thanks to his mastery of magic.
1) Thor

Thor, the God of Thunder, is an incredibly experienced warrior. He’s spent centuries defending Asgard alongside his father and fighting with the Avengers. This extensive combat experience, combined with his divine powers, makes him the best candidate to defeat Doom. He also understands magic well, which could be key to overcoming Doom’s powers. If the Avengers need to choose just one champion for the Doomsday battle, Thor is the clear choice.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
