The next Avengers movie, reportedly titled *Doomsday*, could pit the Avengers against the X-Men in a massive showdown. With 27 actors already confirmed – including heroes from the Avengers, New Avengers, and the X-Men films previously made by 20th Century Fox – fans are anticipating a huge, epic battle between the two teams. The Russo brothers, who are directing the film, have hinted at this possibility, further fueling the excitement.
On September 30, 2025, the directors of the next Avengers movie, the Russo brothers, posted a puzzling image from the set. Fans quickly noticed this was similar to a photo they shared before Avengers: Endgame was announced. That previous image contained a hidden title reveal, so excitement is building. This time, some viewers spotted a large “A” and a series of “X” shapes in the new photo, leading to speculation that the upcoming 2026 crossover film, Avengers: Doomsday, might involve a battle between the Avengers and the X-Men. If true, this could drastically alter the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I’m so excited to hear that so many familiar faces from the *X-Men* movies are coming back! We’re talking about Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and even James Marsden as Cyclops – plus Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Nightcrawler, and Gambit. But it doesn’t stop there! They’ll be teaming up (or maybe battling!) with some of the Avengers and New Avengers. I’m expecting to see Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, along with Shang-Chi, Falcon, Winter Soldier, US Agent, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Red Guardian, and even Sentry. Honestly, just imagining all these heroes and mutants together promises an epic, unforgettable movie!
The Expendables Tier

When considering the Avengers, New Avengers, and X-Men, some heroes are more vulnerable than others in a large-scale conflict. While it’s difficult to imagine iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes not surviving, a potential adaptation of the ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ storyline could lead to casualties. Some heroes, despite their impressive abilities, simply aren’t as powerful as the MCU’s strongest characters and might not make it through a major battle.
Ant-Man, also known as Scott Lang, can change size, which has helped him fight villains like Yellowjacket, Ghost, Sonny Burch, and even Kang the Conqueror. However, despite these impressive abilities, his powers aren’t as naturally strong as those of many other heroes.
Unlike the original Captain America, Sam Wilson doesn’t have any superhuman abilities. He relies on a technologically advanced suit made of vibranium, provided by Wakanda, for protection. Without this suit, or any inherent powers, he’d be vulnerable in a fight against someone with powers, like any of the X-Men.
Like Sam Wilson (the Falcon), Joaquin Torres doesn’t have any inherent superpowers. He also lacks advanced technology like a vibranium suit. Having already been hurt fighting ordinary enemies, he wouldn’t be able to compete against opponents with superpowers or mutant abilities.
Yelena Belova is a highly skilled fighter and spy, but she doesn’t have any natural superpowers. While she’s incredibly capable, she’d be outmatched in a fight against powerful mutants like Professor X, Cyclops, or Nightcrawler, and it would be unfortunate to see her defeated.
Channing Tatum is finally playing Gambit in *Deadpool & Wolverine*, but his role as the energy-manipulating hero might be brief. After Gambit’s death in *X-Men ’97*, there’s a chance he could meet a similar fate when facing powerful enemies like super-soldiers, phasing villains, or even gods in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Warriors Tier

The characters featured in this section – heroes and even some villains – face real danger in *Avengers: Doomsday*, but they’re significantly more resilient than characters like Ant-Man, Falcon, White Falcon, Yelena Belova, and Gambit. This group mainly consists of super-soldiers: powerful fighters who are tough to defeat, though not quite as invincible as the MCU’s god-level beings. It also includes several X-Men, known for their own impressive strength and durability.
Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long time, both in terms of how long he’s appeared in films and his overall backstory. It’s been rewarding to see him join the New Avengers. Although he’s incredibly strong and durable thanks to the super-soldier serum, he can still be hurt or even killed.
There’s been a lot of speculation about how Kelsey Grammer’s Beast will be portrayed in *Doomsday*, but some fans worry he won’t last long. His character was already killed off in the Fox *X-Men* movies, and there’s a chance he could meet a similar end in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Like Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian (Alexei Shostakov) gained his powers from a special Russian experiment that made him a super-soldier. Despite his impressive strength, he wouldn’t stand much of a chance against powerful opponents like Cyclops or Professor X.
Nightcrawler’s ability to teleport is impressive, but it doesn’t protect him from all harm—it just lets him dodge attacks quickly. Facing fast, nimble opponents like a super-soldier or someone who can phase through objects, like Ghost, could prove fatal for Kurt Wagner.
Okay, let’s talk about John Walker, the US Agent. He’s the latest super-soldier the MCU has thrown at us, and honestly? I think a lot of mutants could take him down in a fight, especially in a scenario like *Avengers: Doomsday*. He *is* enhanced, sure, but when you stack him up against the power levels of other heroes we’ve seen, he just doesn’t quite measure up. He’s good, but definitely not top tier.
Mystique is a powerful mutant known for her ability to change her appearance. She was originally portrayed as a villain in the *X-Men* movies, but the timeline was later altered. Having already faced life-threatening situations – including attacks from Wolverine and a mutant “cure” – Mystique could be in danger again in *Avengers: Doomsday*.
Shuri, as the new Black Panther, gained her powers from the heart-shaped herb enhanced by vibranium. However, she sustained significant injuries during her fight with Namor in *Black Panther: Wakanda Forever*, which suggests she might struggle against the stronger mutants appearing in *Avengers: Doomsday*.
James Marsden’s portrayal of Cyclops in the *X-Men* films didn’t fully showcase his abilities, so fans are hoping *Avengers: Doomsday* will give him a chance to shine. While it will be exciting to finally see his powers used to their full potential, there’s a chance he could suffer the same tragic end as in *X-Men: The Last Stand*.
Ava Starr, known as Ghost, stands out as one of the New Avengers’ most powerful members because she can phase through objects. Her natural ability is similar to a mutant power, making her a strong opponent for many, though she likely wouldn’t be evenly matched against someone like Professor X or Magneto.
The God Tier

In *Avengers: Doomsday*, five characters – drawn from the Avengers, New Avengers, and X-Men – stand out as exceptionally resilient. Due to their immense power, powerful weapons, and almost god-like status, these heroes (and villains) are the most likely to survive the conflict between the Avengers and X-Men. The established Marvel Cinematic Universe characters featured here are expected to continue playing significant roles after *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars*, while the X-Men characters will likely be reimagined with new actors for the upcoming MCU *X-Men* reboot.
Thor, the Asgardian God of Thunder, has become increasingly powerful throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He uses his control over lightning, immense strength, and leadership skills to protect the galaxy. He’s proven his incredible resilience – surviving the energy of a star and fighting powerful foes like Thanos and Gorr – suggesting he would likely triumph in a fight against the X-Men.
Shang-Chi is now one of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to ten magical rings he received from his father. These rings grant him a long life, incredible strength, and potentially even more powers that could make him a match for any member of the X-Men.
Erik Lehnsherr, also known as Magneto, is famous for his incredible control over magnetism. That’s why fans are thrilled about Ian McKellen reprising the role in *Avengers: Doomsday*. Following Magneto’s world-altering display of power in *X-Men ’97*, the version we’ll see in *Doomsday* promises to be even more powerful and faithful to the comic books.
Robert Reynolds, also known as Sentry, is the newest hero joining the Thunderbolts, and he’s potentially the most powerful being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanks to a boosted version of the super-soldier serum, Sentry possesses immense power – comparable to a thousand exploding suns. This makes him incredibly durable, practically unmatched in strength, and seemingly invincible. He effortlessly defeated the New Avengers, and there’s a strong possibility he could do the same to the X-Men.
Professor X, also known as Charles Xavier, is one of the most powerful mutants on the planet. His incredible telepathic abilities allow him to read and control the minds of others. While he isn’t without vulnerabilities, Professor X would be a significant advantage to either the Avengers or the X-Men in a fight.
Who Would Win in a Battle Between the Avengers & X-Men?

The upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* will feature a team of incredibly strong and interesting X-Men mutants. However, considering the Avengers and New Avengers have more members and heroes with immense power – like Thor, Shang-Chi, and the Sentry – they appear to have the advantage. While mutants such as Magneto and Professor X will definitely be formidable opponents, the sheer power of the Avengers suggests they’ll likely win. An *Avengers vs. X-Men* story is thrilling, and we’ll have to wait and see who emerges victorious in this massive battle.
