As a longtime fan, I’m not surprised to see the Predators dominating the streaming scene! The newest Predator film is already a hit, following a solid run in theaters. It’s great to see continued interest in this franchise, and it seems another recent installment is also finding its audience online.
New data from FlixPatrol shows that the recent release of Predator: Badlands is increasing interest in the Predator franchise. The 2022 prequel/reboot, Predator, is now the second most-watched movie on Disney+ globally, surpassed only by Predator: Badlands which became available on Disney+ and Hulu earlier this week.
Prey revitalized the Predator franchise by focusing on a simple, classic story of humans versus the alien hunter. Following a period of less successful installments, Prey offered a fresh direction for the series, expanding the possibilities for future stories while still honoring the spirit of the original movies.
The movie Prey was a big hit with both critics and audiences. Although it wasn’t shown in movie theaters, its success convinced studio leaders to release future Predator films theatrically. Much of Prey‘s success came from the overwhelmingly positive reviews it received. With a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it was the highest-rated film in the Predator series until Predator: Killer of Killers was released in 2025.
The recent success of this streaming series is a welcome boost for the Predator franchise, which has been around for almost forty years. There are plans for more Predator stories in the future, potentially drawing on elements from both Prey and Badlands.
What’s Next for the Predator Franchise?
Having directed Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers, and Predator: Badlands, Dan Trachtenberg now has a lot of creative freedom with the Predator franchise. He’s hinted at several ideas for future installments after Badlands, but hasn’t committed to anything specific.
The movie Predator: Badlands finishes with a hint at a sequel, showing a scene before the credits that introduces Dek’s mother and her group. This suggests a continuation of the story nearly forty years after the original Predator film. Although another Badlands movie seems likely, director Trachtenberg might be focusing on other projects first.
The recent Hulu movie, Predator: Killer of Killers, ended with a scene hinting at a large-scale crossover. The post-credits scene shows characters from past Predator films – including Naru from Prey (played by Amber Midthunder) and Mike from Predator 2 (played by Danny Glover) – being held in stasis on a Predator spaceship. Although there’s no official announcement of a follow-up movie yet, Killer of Killers could be the start of a huge new story arc for the Predator franchise.
The Predator series is making a strong comeback, largely thanks to Dan Trachtenberg. With Predator: Badlands and Prey both doing well on streaming services, fans are excited about what’s next for this popular sci-fi franchise.
Predator: Badlands and Prey are available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.
