Predator: Badlands Is On Its Way To Be The Biggest Predator Movie Ever After Its Awesome Box Office Opening Weekend

The Predator franchise took a new direction in 2022. After two previous films, Predators and The Predator, didn’t perform well in theaters, the studio decided to release Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey directly on streaming. It proved to be a critical and popular success. Building on that, the filmmakers aimed for a big theatrical release with Trachtenberg’s next film, Predator: Badlands, and early signs suggest it will be the most successful Predator movie ever.

After a disappointing Halloween weekend at the box office, the new Predator movie has delivered a much-needed boost. It launched as the biggest new film on Friday and quickly became the top-grossing movie in the US. See the complete list of the top 10 films below, and read on for a closer look at the numbers.

Predator: Badlands Has The Best Opening Weekend In The Franchise’s Near-40-Year History

Predator: Badlands was a bit of a risk. Not only did it bring back the dangerous Yautja creatures, but it also made one of them the main character for the first time. It’s also the first Predator movie to be rated PG-13, achieving this by showing a lot of action without harming any people. It was uncertain if these changes would work, but early audience numbers and reviews suggest they did.

Last week, positive reviews for Predator: Badlands – including a three-and-a-half star rating from TopMob’s Sarah El-Mahmoud – generated excitement and led to strong ticket sales. While the film earned $40 million (according to The Numbers), placing it seventeenth among domestic film debuts this year, it’s a significant success for the Predator franchise.

Before this weekend, the biggest opening weekend for a film in this series (without considering inflation) was Paul W.S. Anderson’s Alien vs. Predator, which earned $38.3 million in 2004. Both that film and the new one have strong connections to the Alien franchise, with the new movie specifically including androids created by the fictional Weyland-Yutani corporation, solidifying the connection between the storylines. It’s unclear how much this connection contributed to the new film’s success.

The new film is not only receiving positive reviews from critics, but audiences are enjoying it too. According to opening weekend surveys by CinemaScore, it earned an “A-” – the highest grade any Predator movie has ever received (the original 1987 Predator and Predator 2 from 1990 both earned “B+”). This is a great sign, suggesting the movie should hold up well in theaters over the next week due to people recommending it to others.

The new Predator film, Badlands, is performing exceptionally well internationally, already earning $40 million overseas. This success is a major factor in it becoming the highest-grossing film in the Predator franchise. With $80 million earned in just three days, it has already surpassed the box office totals of the original Predator and Predator 2. It needs just $50 million more to exceed the earnings of Predators and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Currently, Alien vs. Predator holds the record as the most successful film in the series with $172.5 million, but Badlands is quickly closing in and may soon take its place.

The success of Predator: Badlands will depend on its ability to maintain strong ticket sales. While it has the potential to do well, it faces tough competition from several new movies opening this Friday. I’ll be discussing how the film performs in my column next Sunday.

Regretting You Isn’t A It Ends With Us-Level Hit, But It Is Holding On At The Box Office

It’s natural to compare Josh Boone’s Regretting You to Justin Baldoni’s It Ends With Us, as both are based on novels by Colleen Hoover. However, the comparison isn’t positive. It Ends With Us was a major box office success last year, earning $349.7 million globally, while Regretting You hasn’t reached that level. Still, Regretting You is currently staying in the top three most-watched movies a few weeks after its release.

Despite opening around the same time as the popular anime film Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc, Regretting You has surprisingly maintained a strong performance in theaters. While it initially competed with Chainsaw Man and briefly tied with Black Phone 2 for the top spot at the box office last weekend (eventually finishing second), ticket sales only decreased by nine percent from Friday, showing impressive staying power.

The movie earned $7.1 million over the weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to $38.6 million. Globally, the film has now grossed $71 million.

The box office rankings are likely to look very different next week. Several new movies are coming out, including Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, Osgood Perkins’ Keeper, and Ruben Fleischer’s Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Check back with TopMob next Sunday for a full analysis of how the new releases impact the Top 10.
