Predator: Badlands – The Unmade Star Wars Movie Inspiration

Dan Trachtenberg, the director of the new sci-fi film Predator: Badlands, is talking about a Star Wars movie that was planned but never made for nearly 45 years. This project was intended to follow The Empire Strikes Back.

Director Dan Trachtenberg recently spoke with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan about his new film, Predator: Badlands. During the interview, he explained how a surprising source – the team-up of C-3PO and Chewbacca in Star Wars – served as inspiration for a key element in Badlands.

It’s surprising this hasn’t been made into a movie! The concept opens up so many possibilities – a fun relationship dynamic between two very different people who are unexpectedly linked. Plus, from an action perspective, it’s brilliant – you could have one character focused on one threat while the other deals with something completely different, allowing for really dynamic and exciting scenes.

The new action series, Predator: Badlands, will premiere on November 7th. The story follows Dek, a young predator outcast from his clan, and Thia, a broken synthetic being. Together, they must undertake a dangerous quest to defeat a powerful enemy.

The Predator movies have had a mixed history. While the first film from 1987, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is widely considered a classic, the sequels haven’t always been well-received by critics. More recently, Prey (2022) breathed new life into the series, and the animated film Predator: Killer of Killers (2025) is also generating excitement.

As a lifelong cinema fan, I’ve seen how sprawling franchises like Star Wars can become. It’s amazing to see how Predator: Badlands echoes that classic buddy-dynamic we love – it really reminded me of The Empire Strikes Back and the unexpected teamwork between Chewbacca and C-3PO. Director Trachtenberg talked about how…

This is fantastic news for fans of the Predator series, which has always kept us coming back for more. But it’s also a huge moment for science fiction fans in general. We’ve always loved the aliens and monsters in Star Wars, but they’ve never gotten a movie focused entirely on them. That’s what makes this project so exciting – it’s like finally getting a movie centered around characters like Chewbacca and C-3PO.

At the premiere on Monday, November 3rd, Dakota Fanning discussed her new role and revealed a connection to the Alien franchise. She explained that the film features the Weyland-Yutani corporation as a significant element, essentially making it a crossover event.

Although there aren’t many reviews yet for the new sci-fi film, excitement is building thanks to director Trachtenberg’s previous hit, Prey, which received a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans are expecting another fantastic story.
