Ever since director Dan Trachtenberg made Prey in 2022, he’s shown he’s a big fan of the Predator movies. Prey expanded on the series’ history, referencing details fans had noticed for decades, and hinted at even more to come. The recent animated anthology, Predator: Killer of Killers, confirmed a larger story arc is planned, connecting characters from Prey, Predator 2 (including Danny Glover’s character), and the original Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. And the filmmakers aren’t finished yet.
The new movie, Predator: Badlands, is quite different from director Dan Trachtenberg’s previous films. Unlike other Predator movies where humans are the main focus, this one puts a Predator in the leading role, showing its struggle for survival and proving its worth. The trailer hinted at a connection between the Predator and Alien franchises, sparking questions about future plans. Fortunately, Trachtenberg has shared what those plans are.
The Modern Predator Franchise Is More Influenced by Marvel Than You Realize

During an interview with ComicBook to promote Predator: Badlands, we asked director Dan Trachtenberg about the purpose of all the connections he was creating within the Predator franchise. He explained his approach by comparing it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, offering fans a clear understanding of his intentions.
The director explained that the success of The Avengers relied on building a foundation first. It wasn’t the first or second Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which allowed audiences to connect with the characters and enjoy their standalone stories. This groundwork was crucial, because it meant audiences were already invested when those characters finally came together.
When asked about fans comparing him to Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Trachtenberg said he takes it as a compliment. He considers Feige a genius and acknowledges the unprecedented success of the Marvel films. Trachtenberg humbly pointed out he’s only made a couple of well-received Predator movies so far, but hopes to make a third. He’s optimistic about what the future holds.
With the success of recent installments like Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, plus the excitement around Predator: Badlands, the Predator franchise is currently stronger than ever. While there have been several Predator movies over the years, the series has historically been more of a fan favorite than a mainstream hit. If future films continue this positive trend and resonate with audiences – and early signs suggest they will – Predator could become one of Hollywood’s next major science fiction franchises.
Predator: Badlands arrives in theaters this Friday.
