Including the two Alien vs. Predator movies, there are now nine films in the franchise. Right in the middle of them all is 2010’s Predators. Produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimrod Antal, this third film boasts a great cast, an interesting story, and a good balance of practical creature effects and digital visuals. However, despite all its strengths, it’s unfortunately been largely overlooked after 16 years.
While recent Predator installments like Prey and Predators: Badlands have been well-received, the 2010 film Predators didn’t quite achieve the same lasting impact as the original 1987 movie. Mixed reviews and a lack of distinction within the franchise contributed to this. However, rumors suggest that casting a major star could have significantly improved the film, potentially bringing it closer to the quality of the first Predator.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Decided He Won’t Be Back for Predators
The original Predator film is memorable for many reasons, but especially for its fantastic cast. Actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, and Bill Duke, along with Elpidia Carrillo, Richard Chaves, Shane Black, Jesse Ventura, and Sonny Landham, each brought a unique and powerful energy to the group. They played a rugged team of soldiers who, without realizing it, become the prey of a terrifyingly advanced alien hunter. The creators of the sequel, Nimrod Antal and Robert Rodriguez, specifically aimed to recreate this strong ensemble dynamic.
The cast of Predators is incredibly strong, featuring actors like Adrian Brody, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershala Ali, Topher Grace, and Louis Ozama Changchien. The film clearly aims to assemble a group of skilled and dangerous characters who are outmatched on an alien planet. Casting a well-known actor like Brody in the lead role is an unexpected choice, but it surprisingly works.
Although Predators is a sequel to the first Predator film and essentially disregards Predator 2, it doesnāt feel strongly connected to the original movie, despite aiming for a similar vibe as James Cameronās Aliens. The filmmakers did try to link it back, however; director Robert Rodriguez wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger to return as Dutch, the character he famously played in the original, but that didnāt happen.
It’s unclear why, but Arnold Schwarzenegger declined a role in Predators, and the film definitely feels like it suffered from his absence. Laurence Fishburne appears near the end as a U.S. soldier who has been surviving on the alien planet for years. The role seems tailor-made for Schwarzenegger’s character Dutch from the original Predator, and once you realize thatās likely what the filmmakers intended, it’s hard to see Fishburne in the part the same way, even though he’s a solid actor.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Larger-Than-Life Legacy Could’ve Aided Predators’ Cultural Impact
The setup for the movie Predators is actually quite strong. It takes a diverse group ā including soldiers, criminals, and those on missions ā and throws them onto the Predatorsā home planet. This is a clever spin on the original Predatorās idea, though it doesnāt quite capture the same mix of scary thrills and action that made the first film so popular. In a way, Predators feels like a precursor to the Suicide Squad concept.
The film has a good premise for a sequel and generally delivers, but it doesn’t take many risks or offer anything truly original. It feels like a follow-up that tries hard to live up to the first film, rather than forging its own identity.
The movie would have been much stronger if it had fully embraced its connection to the original Predator and Arnold Schwarzeneggerās character. Continuing Dutchās story and having him act as a mentor would have tapped into fansā fondness for the first film, strengthened the overall storyline, and highlighted the franchiseās lasting influence. It would have been a fitting continuation and a more meaningful addition to the series.
The writers might not have been able to successfully include Dutch’s character, or their vision for him could be why Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t return for Predators. However, if they had managed to bring him back, it could have significantly improved the film and changed how it’s viewed today.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Might Still Return to the Predator Franchise
Although Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t end up appearing in the 2010 movie Predators, which likely hurt its success, there’s still a good chance he’ll revisit the Predator franchise. Heās returned to roles like Conan the Barbarian and Terminator, and even continued with The Expendables, but heās never reprised his role in a Predator sequel. However, fans and the media have often discussed the possibility of seeing his character, Dutch, return, separate from the less-remembered film directed by Robert Rodriguez.
At this year’s Arnold Sports Festival, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that Dan Trachtenberg, the director of the latest three Predator movies, contacted him about a possible appearance in a future film. Schwarzenegger didn’t confirm anything is in the works, saying they only had initial discussions. However, he suggested he’s open to the idea, as he likely wouldn’t have mentioned it otherwise.
As a big fan, I wasn’t at all surprised to hear Dan Trachtenberg wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger back in the Predator universe. He actually hinted at it in his animated film, Predator: Killer of Killers, with a quick shot of Dutch in cryo-sleep! Arnold wasnāt in the movie, of course, but it was a clear signal that Trachtenberg envisions him as a major part of whatās next for the franchise, and honestly, who wouldn’t want to see that?
As a huge fan of the Predator films, I’m still holding out hope that Arnold Schwarzenegger might return as Dutch someday, even if it’s just a cameo. Honestly, if he’d signed on for this latest one, it could have really lifted it. It wasn’t bad, exactly, but it definitely didn’t reach the same incredible level as the original movie he starred in. It just feltā¦okay. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a more exciting future installment, and maybe, just maybe, a return of the man himself!
