With a baby on the way, Hayley Erbert is reflecting on a past health battle she faced.
The dancer is celebrating two years since her life-saving brain surgery in December 2023 to treat bleeding in the skull. She’s also expecting her first child with Derek Hough.
Today marks two years since Hayley had brain surgery that saved her life. Sharing photos of her baby bump on Instagram, she reflected on the emotional journey of the past two years, describing how sheās experienced both incredibly painful and healing feelings.
I’ve gone through a lot over the past few years and feel like I’ve rediscovered who I am. There have been times of loss and great joy, fear and healing, but through it all, I’ve found hope. It’s been a challenging journey, but I’m grateful for everything and incredibly proud of how strong I’ve been.

Derek, who married Hayley shortly before she faced a health crisis, recently talked about becoming a father. He jokingly told TopMob News that he’s been experiencing all the feelings usually associated with pregnancy, mirroring what his wife has gone through.
In November, the 40-year-old described feeling overwhelmed with emotion, sometimes to the point of tears. They contrasted this with the calmness of the person they were talking about, praising her peaceful and supportive nature.
Derek added, “It’s been wonderful seeing her become such a great mother, even before the baby arrives.”

Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert first met in 2014 while performing on a tour together with Derek’s sister, Julianne. A producer from Dancing With the Stars was so impressed with Hayley that she was invited to audition for the show’s dance ensemble and was hired the following year, as reported by the Hutchinson News. Hayley and Derek began dating in 2015.
They started attending events together, including the premiere of the Netflix documentary I Am Not Your Guru, featuring Tony Robbins, in 2016.

Hayley had emergency brain surgery after a blood vessel ruptured, and Derek was with her throughout it all. Over a week later, he shared on Instagram that the experience was terrifying, going from performing on stage to facing a sudden crisis. He described her recovery as remarkable, calling it a miracle.
Hayley and Derek were able to restart their Symphony of Dance tour in April 2024 after receiving medical approval. In October, Hayley made a heartwarming return to dancing, performing an emotional routine with her husband to Benson Booneās song, āBeautiful Things.ā
The couple shared exciting news: they’re expecting their first child! They announced the pregnancy on Instagram with a video of the baby’s sonogram, and Hayley wrote, “We canāt believe something so small could bring so much joy.”
