President Biden thanks Nigerian President for Binance exec’s release

As a crypto investor with a background in law enforcement and a keen interest in global financial systems, I find myself deeply troubled by the ordeal of Tigran Gambaryan, the Binance executive who was held in Nigeria for eight long months on allegations that many believe were politically motivated.

U.S. President Joe Biden contacted Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, expressing gratitude for the release of Binance’s chief of financial crime compliance, who was set free due to compassionate reasons.

As per a statement issued by the White House on October 29th, President Biden had a conversation with President Tinubu during which he expressed gratitude for the role Tinubu played in facilitating the release of American citizen and ex-law enforcement officer Tigran Gambaryan on compassionate grounds.

The Binance executive had been in Nigeria custody for roughly eight months until being allowed to leave the country on Oct. 23.

Held for eight months, repeatedly denied bail

On February 26th, Nigerian officials apprehended Gambaryan and his associate Nadeem Anjarwalla upon their arrival in Abuja. Their visit aimed to deliberate on Binance‘s operations and allegations of questionable transactions at the cryptocurrency exchange.

It was indicated that Anjarwalla managed to elude his custody in March and absconded to Kenya, whereas Gambaryan chose to stay behind to answer for the allegations of tax evasion and money laundering.

As an analyst, I’ve been closely following the case of the Binance executive detained at Kuje Prison. It has come to light that Gambaryan has experienced several health issues during his imprisonment, such as pneumonia, malaria, and complications with his spine. Despite these challenges, authorities have persistently postponed hearings and refused bail, asserting that he presents a flight risk.

Previously employed by the Internal Revenue Service as a special agent, Gambaryan’s case garnered interest from global news sources and government representatives due to speculation that the accusations were primarily aimed at Binance, rather than its employees. In September, a video was posted online depicting Gambaryan having difficulty walking towards court, sparking indignation among many individuals, including Binance’s CEO, Richard Teng.

Teng expressed, on September 3rd via X-post, that the cruel handling of Tigran needs to stop. He should be granted permission to return home for medical care and to reunite with his loved ones.

In June, Nigerian authorities withdrew tax evasion allegations against Anjarwalla and Gambaryan, while money laundering accusations were dismissed in October. A representative for the Binance executive’s family stated that he departed the country within 24 hours of the final charges being cleared to obtain medical care in the United States.
