Brazilian music fans are mourning the loss of one of their brightest stars.
The well-known Brazilian performer and TV personality, known as Preta Gil (born as Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira), passed away following a tough two-year fight against colon cancer, according to her family’s announcement on Instagram. She was 50 years old.
We deeply mourn the loss of our cherished Preta Gil. Sadly, Pretinha passed away on July 20th, an afternoon filled with sorrow. After a valiant fight against cancer, she bravely persevered for a long time. Her family announced this tragic news in a post on Instagram on the 21st of July. In recognition of her life, a wake will take place in Rio de Janeiro, providing an opportunity for loved ones, friends, and the public to pay their final respects.
In their final remarks, Preta’s family, comprising parents Gilbert Gil and Sandra Gadelha, acknowledged the support of their fans by saying, “Thank you once more for your compassion, respect, and comprehension.
Subsequently, it was verified that Preta’s father passed away during medical care for his ailment in New York City at the age of 50.
On July 20th, her father stated, “We’re handling the steps to bring her back to Brazil.” He also requested patience from their many friends, admirers, and media colleagues as they go through this challenging period as a family.
Ever since her colon cancer diagnosis in 2023, Preta has been documenting her persistent struggle. She announced in February that she had already endured more than 50 days at the hospital for treatment.
She posted on Instagram, “I’ve been released from the hospital!” She shared a video of herself walking through a hallway where her medical team was cheering for her. After spending 55 days in the hospital following her surgery, it had been nearly two months of battling and unwavering faith. Now, she is beginning a new life at home, more resilient!

Without a doubt, Preta always prioritized her family, friends, and medical team throughout her treatment process.
In her February post, she expressed gratitude to her family, friends, and all who could be there for her during her time of need. She also thanked those who showered her with love, faith, and positive energy. She acknowledged that they helped her win yet another battle, and assured everyone that the fight goes on.
