In the initial ten minutes of the Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival demonstration, our characters Aidan and Sunny were engaged in an unusual act involving mutual pin-pricking and sensual self-mutilation using sharp instruments. This scene was suggestive rather than explicit.
The Hellraiser franchise, renowned for its provocative themes, maintains this sensuality in its game version. This game presents an unconventional level of sexual content within the gaming industry. In a subsequent scene, the protagonist is depicted nailed to a chair, completely bare, with a camera angle that offers a suggestive view of his well-endowed figure.
We inquired about the collaboration between game designer Srdjan Nedic and ratings boards such as the ESRB and PEGI, to find out if Hellraiser’s release would be possible. He explained that his team at Mad Head Games is meticulously pushing the boundaries of what they can depict, with each scene carefully crafted to stay true to the original material without crossing any lines.
In simpler terms, we found the demo incredibly impressive during our first hour of playing it on a PC. The captivating introductions featuring the famous villain Pinhead were visually stunning, appearing high-budget, and featured the original actor Doug Bradley reprising his role as the enigmatic character.
As a devoted gamer, I’d describe it as an immersive, solo journey that puts you right in the heart of the action, much like the more recent Resident Evil installments such as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil: Village. You’ll find yourself exploring a captivating narrative from a first-person viewpoint.
The demo initiates as you sneak through gruesomely intricate passageways, following your unexpected encounter with Sunny that unintentionally activated the Cenobites via the Genesis Configuration – an oddly potent artifact containing mysterious abilities.
It appears that Sunny may have fallen under the influence of a twisted group, giving up her physical self to them. However, you’ve been experiencing glimpses of her that suggest there could be hope for her rescue – or could these visions be merely products of your mind?
The demo initially moves at a leisurely pace, allowing ample time for immersion into the environment and thorough exploration of all hidden details. Though primarily linear, the experience is enhanced by the ability to leisurely gather resources that can be utilized to create essential items like bandages, medicines, and more.
Similar to games such as Layers of Fear and PT,
Aidan is not just the main character, he’s also athletic. Throughout the demo, the atmosphere shifts. At certain moments, you’ll be chased by a Cenobite, leading to a chase that requires trial and error. During this pursuit, you’ll often encounter the antagonist warping in front of you, forcing you to rely on swift turns and slides to avoid his grasp.
In this scenario, there’s a subtle undertone of annoyance due to the fact that making even a single mistake can lead to an immediate setback. We encountered several instances where staircases and doorways led us nowhere, resulting in having to start all over again. However, the sequence effectively mirrors the nail-biting suspense you’d expect from a horror game; it will feel like you’ve barely scraped by with your life.
As the demonstration continues, the game gradually introduces combat elements. Initially, hand-to-hand weapons such as knives and bats are used, later followed by firearms. Although ammunition is scarce, the game appears to be a horror title where you’ll likely have to engage in some violent encounters. From the trailers and images released, it seems that the Genesis Configuration will equip you with otherworldly powers, though we haven’t had the opportunity to try that out just yet.
In this game, the battles have a satisfying “crunch” to them. You’ll find that you can opt for a stealthy strategy or a more direct approach, depending on your style of play. Although there are parts in the demo where concealment is necessary, we sense that a significant portion of the game will let you decide between launching an all-out assault or adopting a more strategic stance.
Indeed, we found ourselves quite captivated by it. The game seems to stay faithful to its roots, and as a result, it appears unique among its peers. Although the gaming world is familiar with graphic violence, the topic of sexual deviance is somewhat of a sensitive subject – but given that this is Hellraiser, it must tackle these themes. We’re intrigued to find out how closely the final product will push boundaries.
Will you be unboxing Hellraiser: Revival when it releases in 2026, or are you planning to avoid this experience altogether? The blend of sex and horror piques your interest, or do you find it excessive? Resist the temptation of Cenobites in the comment section below.
