The complete full-cast audio adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel “Pride and Prejudice” by Audible is now ready for listening, featuring Marisa Abela portraying Elizabeth Bennet and Harris Dickinson essaying the role of Mr. Darcy.
As the recipient of a BAFTA award for my exceptional portrayal in ‘Industry’ just this past year, I had the privilege to share my unique take on Elizabeth and the elements I aimed to embody in this remarkable character during an exclusive interview with TopMob.
Abela remarked that she found it delightful to portray a character who was determined, strong-willed, and somewhat obstinate, particularly at the outset. What really drew him to her was her sharp wit, which he felt was essential for the character. He wanted to ensure she seemed quick-thinking and intelligent from the very beginning when he first encountered her in the book.
However, an underlying tenderness permeates consistently, and a susceptibility also persists all through. I’m truly thrilled to join the ranks of those who’ve tried their hand at it.
Abela discussed her opinion on what makes Jane Austen’s novels so versatile. Specifically, she pointed out how Pride and Prejudice has been translated into numerous forms of media multiple times, including a recent adaptation that will be shown on Netflix soon.
Abela stated that her work resonates with the human condition, focusing on themes such as love, disagreements, personal growth, overcoming self-doubt, and encountering another individual. I believe she’s exceptionally skilled at creating relatable romantic scenarios, and we can all relate to those experiences.
Stepping into her realm is effortless; she appears to be remarkably intelligent, and her world seems strikingly contemporary. It’s surprising how relatable the characters in Pride and Prejudice feel – as if you could encounter them in real life today. I believe that timeless romance, such as this one, has a remarkable ability to withstand the passage of time.
In addition to the other stars, Marianne Jean-Baptiste takes on the role of Mrs. Bennet, Bill Nighy portrays Mr. Bennet, and Glenn Close is cast as Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Audible’s latest adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
