Season 3 of Primal has taken an exciting turn with its latest episode on Adult Swim. The show’s creator recently shared how challenging it was to keep the character Fang out of the initial episodes. Primal, created by Genndy Tartakovsky, returned to Adult Swim for its third season and surprised viewers by following a zombified Spear through a desolate landscape. This week’s episode brought back both Fang and Mira, who hadn’t been seen since the end of season two.
The latest season of Primal began by focusing on a zombie warrior, but things became clearer in Episode 4 when the story shifted to Mira and Fang after the events of Season 2. Creator Genndy Tartakovsky explained to ComicBook that he aimed for unpredictability this season, but it was challenging to keep Fang out of the story for long. He said, “You can’t really do a season of Primal without Fang being involved,” and admitted it was difficult to wait until the fourth episode to bring her back.
Primal Creator on Fang’s Return in Season 3 Episode 4
When asked about delaying Fang’s introduction until the fourth episode, Tartakovsky explained he doesn’t want viewers to try and guess what will happen next. He wants them to relax and simply enjoy the story as it unfolds. He shared that creating this sense of unpredictability is a key goal for his shows, and something he appreciates in other entertainment as well.
The creator shared that he enjoys a bit of unpredictability in movies and TV because it allows him to fully immerse himself in the story. He explained that certain core elements can’t be removed, using his show Primal as an example – Fang is essential. It was difficult delaying Fang’s appearance until the fourth episode because he worried viewers might assume she and Mira wouldn’t be part of the season if they weren’t shown early on.
Primal Creator’s Worries About Fang’s Late Return
The upcoming season will have three episodes, and many fans are wondering if Fang and Mira will appear at all, and when they might join the story. However, the creators felt it worked best to introduce the first three episodes without them, then bring them in later. Tartakovsky explained they considered starting with Spear’s funeral – a more typical approach – but ultimately decided against it because they didn’t think it would be as effective.
The creator of Primal preferred to begin the story with a compelling question – things like, ‘What is this place? Who are these people? What just happened?’ This approach, relying on visual storytelling rather than dialogue, creates a puzzle for the viewer to solve, and that was especially true in the first three episodes, and will continue throughout the season.
Fang’s reappearance is a major development in Spear’s story, and we’ll see how that unfolds throughout the rest of the season. New episodes of Primal Season 3 are available on Adult Swim Sundays, and then on HBO Max the following day. You can also watch past episodes on HBO Max to get caught up before the action really heats up.
