Be warned, this contains major spoilers for the final episodes (8 and 9) of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal Season 3! As Primal nears the end of its third season on Adult Swim, Spear has changed dramatically in a way viewers likely didn’t predict. A key element from the very first season has returned to help resolve a major, long-running storyline. Genndy Tartakovsky, the series creator, recently spoke with ComicBook and revealed how this storyline finally pays off.
In the latest episode of Primal Season 3, fans witnessed a surprising turn as the zombified Spear fought his way to becoming king. After each win, he consumed a strange black elixir—one viewers may remember from the show’s first season—which was actually reviving him. This elixir ultimately restored Spear’s humanity, and creator Genndy Tartakovsky recently explained his reasons for bringing it back and using it in this way.
Primal Creator Explains Using Black Goo to Revive Spear
I was really trying to figure out a way forward, and honestly, I didn’t want to just add more magic to the story. It felt like an easy way out, you know? So, I came up with this idea of him falling – tumbling off that ledge, down the waterfall – and ending up in this lost world. That’s where the Black Elixir comes from! What I loved about it was connecting it back to that ‘Rage of the Ape-Men’ episode from Season One – it was such a strong memory for a lot of people. I was counting on fans remembering the elixir from that episode, and I think it worked!
The creator explained that the powerful nature of the liquid is well-known, especially among fans. They also enjoyed revisiting an element from the first season to reward long-time viewers. Knowing it was the third season, and assuming most viewers had seen everything before, they decided to bring something familiar back. This connected to the caretakers of the Black River, and ultimately helped Spear regain his humanity. It just felt like the right move.
Is Primal Season 3 the Final Season?

As a huge fan of Primal, I’m completely hooked by the final episode of Season 3! Seeing Spear back to his old self, and Mira having the baby, has really got me thinking about how it all fits into the story, especially after that shocking ending to Season 2. But honestly, it’s brilliant how Genndy Tartakovsky is bringing back elements from Season 1 – it feels like he’s perfectly tying everything together and giving Spear’s journey a really satisfying conclusion. It’s like the whole series is coming full circle, and I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up!
This season has taken a different direction than the previous two, but it still captures the heart of what fans originally loved about the show. As it nears its conclusion, viewers won’t want to miss the season finale to see how everything comes together.
