In 2025, animated films led the way at the box office. Though several genres saw successful movies, Disney’s Zootopia 2 and the fantasy adventure Ne Zha 2 were the biggest hits, becoming the year’s highest-grossing films and proving animation’s continued popularity. However, not all animated movies performed well, and one of the biggest disappointments of the year has just become available to stream on Prime Video.
The Smurfs have been a popular franchise for years, but the newest movie didn’t perform well. It only earned $124 million in theaters, making it a major animated disappointment in 2025, especially compared to previous Smurfs films. The movie, now available on Prime Video since January 16th, tells the story of the Smurfs going on an adventure into the human world to rescue Papa Smurf from the villains, Razamel and Gargamel.
Smurfs Was One of 2025’s More Forgettable Movies
The movie Smurfs wasn’t successful with audiences or critics. It received a low 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is considered a disappointing and forgettable film, even within its own franchise and among animated movies released in 2025. While the visuals were bright and colorful, they weren’t enough to save the film.
Critics and audiences generally agreed the movie lacked originality and failed to engage viewers. It heavily depended on the popularity of the Smurfs brand and its actors, but even that wasn’t enough to overcome a convoluted and unfunny plot involving multiple universes. The combination of animation and live-action felt jarring, and the story simply rehashed old ideas. One critic described it as a movie that shouldn’t have been made, while another said it existed solely to exploit the Smurfs name. According to one reviewer, the film was a forgettable and uninspired mess that offered nothing new or interesting to audiences.
While the Smurfs movie wasn’t a critical success – many found it unoriginal and lacking humor – it did appeal more to general audiences, earning a 64% approval rating. Critics and viewers alike agreed the story was weak. However, the film has found some popularity on streaming platforms. It hasn’t become a top overall movie on Prime Video, but it currently ranks as the ninth most popular kids’ movie in the U.S. on the service.
What’s New on Prime Video?
Prime Video added a bunch of new movies in January, including Smurfs. The streamer kicked off the month with several arrivals, such as The Angry Birds Movie, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Straight Outta Compton, The Breakfast Club, and Zombieland: Double Tap. More recently, they’ve also added titles like Kung Fu Panda 4 and Spring Fever.
