Prime Video has greenlit a new series based on the acclaimed Image Comics title, Sex Criminals.
The TV adaptation of the critically acclaimed comic book series Sex Criminals, created by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, will be led by Kumail Nanjiani (known for Silicon Valley), Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick), and Tze Chun (Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai). Nanjiani will also be a star in the show.
I’m completely hooked on this story about Suze! She has this incredible, bizarre ability – time actually stops when she’s intimate with someone. Then she meets Jon, and get this, he has the same thing happening to him! It’s wild. They quickly figure out they could really exploit this, but not for anything good. It doesn’t take long before they decide to use their power to rob banks, and honestly, it’s a thrilling ride!
As someone who’s seen a lot of adaptations, it’s always great to meet a creator genuinely passionate about the source material. I recently spoke with Chun, who’s producing the Sex Criminals series for Prime Video, and he told me he’s been hooked on the comics since 2013. He’s been trying to get this project off the ground for nearly ten years, and you can really feel how much this adaptation means to him – it truly is a dream come true for him.
I’ve loved Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals since it first came out. Working on this show has been a long-time dream of mine, and collaborating with Emily and Kumail has been a fantastic experience. We’re thrilled to be bringing the series to viewers with the help of our amazing teams at Lucky Chap and Prime Video.
Gordon and Nanjiani released a statement saying they loved the series. They shared that they were immediately enthusiastic about joining the Prime Video show when they first heard about it, and were thrilled to be able to play these characters on screen.
Sex Criminals is precisely the type of unique and heartfelt story Winter Coat looks to produce – a love story set in an unusual world. We at LuckyChap were immediately drawn to Matt and Chip’s comic and thrilled to partner with Tze Chun and Prime Video to bring these characters to life on screen.
I’m a huge fan of Sex Criminals, and it’s so much more than just an Eisner Award winner! It’s incredible that it also took home a Harvey Award and was even named Time Magazine’s best comic series of the year. And it makes perfect sense, because Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky are both seriously talented creators – they’ve each worked on so many amazing books, both for the big publishers and on their own independent projects.
Mark Zdarsky currently writes Captain America. He previously worked on Batman for DC Comics, where his run was highly praised and significantly impacted the character. Zdarsky is also a talented artist, creating cover art for various series and serving as the primary artist for Sex Criminals. Currently, Jonathan Hickman is writing Batman, and he’s also known for his work on multiple X-Men titles, as well as Doctor Strange and Fantastic Four.
As of today, Prime Video hasn’t announced a release date for its adaptation of Sex Criminals. The comic book series that the show is based on finished in 2020 and can still be found at comic shops, on Kindle, and through Google Play.
