Horror films were the big winners at the box office in 2025. Movies like Sinners, Weapons, and Final Destination Bloodlines helped the genre earn over $1 billion domestically by September – making it one of the most successful years for horror in a long time. While 2026 is also looking promising for horror, the year’s biggest hit is now available to stream on Prime Video, though there’s a catch for fans.
On April 21st, The Conjuring: Last Rites began streaming on Prime Video. This film is meant to be the final chapter in the main Conjuring series, and a farewell to the actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga who play Ed and Lorraine Warren. However, it’s currently the only movie from the nine-film Conjuring universe available on the platform. Set in the 1980s, the movie follows the Warrens as they investigate a terrifying demon connected to a cursed mirror, fighting to protect the haunted Smurl family – and themselves – from a powerful evil force.
The Conjuring: Last Rites Was a Record-Breaking Final Chapter for the Warrens
Even before its release in September 2025, The Conjuring Universe was already the most successful horror franchise of all time. The latest film, Last Rites, directed by Ian Goldberg, took it to an even higher level. Last Rites earned around $194 million worldwide during its opening weekend, breaking the record for the biggest horror movie opening ever, previously held by It. This success also brought the total 2025 horror movie box office over $1 billion. By the end of its run in theaters, Last Rites had grossed $499 million, making it the highest-earning film in The Conjuring Universe series and the year’s most successful horror movie.
As a big horror fan, I’ve been following The Conjuring universe closely, and Last Rites definitely sparked some debate. Critics were pretty split, giving it a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes – putting it in the middle of the pack for the series. A lot of them felt it dragged on too long, and the villain wasn’t as compelling as in previous films. But audiences? They really liked it! It scored a 77% approval rating, and people seemed to appreciate that it felt like a return to the classic haunted house vibe of the first movie. They praised the scares and, importantly, how much the film focused on the strong emotional connection between the Warrens. Interestingly, even though the studio promoted Last Rites as the end of this chapter for the Warrens, it did so well that they’re already planning another prequel, The Conjuring: First Communion, which is coming out in September 2027! So much for ‘Phase One’ being over!
Other Horror Movies Now on Prime Video
Prime Video has a lot of scary movies available this April, and it’s not just The Conjuring: Last Rites. Other recent additions include classic horror like the original Child’s Play, its 2019 remake, and titles like Dark Harvest, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Lifeforce, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, and The Prodigy.
