Prime Video’s epic fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, is now in its third season, and canceling it now would be a mistake. The show has spent two seasons building important storylines – like the emergence of Sauron, the creation of the rings, and the growing conflicts within Middle-earth – and ending it prematurely would disrupt these developing plots.
Okay, so The Rings of Power is really at a make-or-break moment – we’re finally getting to the Elf-Sauron war everyone’s been anticipating. And honestly, if the show doesn’t continue, it’s going to be incredibly frustrating. We’ve spent a whole season building up to what happens after Sauron gives those nine rings to men, and to just leave those storylines hanging would be a real letdown for anyone who’s been invested in the show from the start. It feels like we need to see where it all goes.
Amazon hasn’t always had success with fantasy shows, especially after cancelling The Wheel of Time. Allowing The Rings of Power to run for at least three seasons would give the story the time it needs to develop, earning the trust of viewers, and also allow for a deeper exploration of the important history and details within The Lord of the Rings universe.
The Rings Of Power’s Future Beyond Season 3 Is Not Guaranteed
From the beginning, The Rings of Power was conceived as an extensive story, showing how evil grew in Middle-earth during the Second Age. The show’s creators, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, originally planned a five-season storyline. However, with Amazon investing over $1 billion in The Rings of Power, it’s uncertain whether the show will be able to follow that original plan.
From the beginning, The Rings of Power has faced challenges in gaining the approval of J.R.R. Tolkien fans. Many viewers and critics have pointed out that the Prime Video series deviates from the original books and features weaker writing that doesn’t align with Tolkien’s vision. A key example is the portrayal of the Harfoots – the ancestors of the Hobbits – as a people who would abandon members of their group if they fell behind on their travels. This is quite different from Tolkien’s depiction of them as a gentle and caring community.
Despite the criticisms, The Rings of Power has continued and attempted to address its initial weaknesses. However, the show may be struggling, as viewership isn’t high enough to justify the significant production costs, meaning Prime Video isn’t seeing a return on its investment.
Even if Amazon cancels The Rings of Power after three seasons, they’d still face significant financial losses, potentially owing Tolkien’s estate $20 million per unreleased season. However, with viewership dropping in season two, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify continuing the show any further.
The Rings Of Power Season 3 Will Likely End On A Major Cliffhanger
The second season of The Rings of Power left viewers with a major unresolved plot point, and the third season is expected to do the same. While details are scarce, season 3 will likely jump forward in time to show the length of the war between Sauron and the Elves. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories, this war concluded in 1701, but a significant event in Númenor didn’t happen until much later, in 3255.
Even though The Rings of Power streamlines the original stories, trying to fit centuries of history into just a few episodes feels too rushed and doesn’t allow for a well-developed narrative. Sauron consistently seeks greater power, but his attempt to dominate the Númenóreans failed because he understood that brute force wouldn’t be enough to overcome them.
Instead of confronting his enemies directly, he devised a scheme to be captured, intending to undermine the kingdom from the inside by exploiting its vulnerabilities and using trickery. The third season of The Rings of Power will probably finish with a dramatic unresolved ending, postponing the fallout from the events in Númenor and the repercussions of Sauron’s plans for future seasons – assuming the show continues beyond that point.
The Rings Of Power Season 4 Would Offer A Better Ending Point
The future of The Rings of Power is uncertain, but it would likely benefit from ending after four seasons rather than three. Continuing beyond season three would give the show enough time to properly wrap up all the storylines it has developed.
The fourth season of The Rings of Power will probably show the destruction of Númenor, a key event in Tolkien’s stories. When Pharazôn and his army sailed to the land of the Valar, intending to destroy it, the Vala Manwë asked Ilúvatar (God) for help. Ilúvatar then caused a massive chasm to open, sinking the island of Númenor and everyone on it – including Sauron.
After the island of Númenor was destroyed, Elves and Men joined forces in a great army called The Last Alliance, determined to defeat Sauron. The resulting war was incredibly brutal, with heavy losses on both sides. Though Sauron was badly wounded, he wasn’t completely destroyed.
As a fan, I really think ending The Rings of Power with the start of the Third Age, after Sauron’s fall, would be amazing. It would be so much better than stopping right as the big stuff happens! Season 4 could really give us a detailed and satisfying conclusion to Sauron’s reign in the Second Age, and perfectly connect everything to the Lord of the Rings trilogy we all love.
Despite not being a huge hit with everyone, The Rings of Power is actually one of the strongest fantasy shows available on streaming services. Hopefully, it will get the chance to finish its story as intended, and deliver a satisfying conclusion to this epic saga. It would be disappointing to see it end prematurely.
