Prime Video Just Added a Forgotten Animated Movie That Put a Twist on a Horror Classic

Animated horror films aren’t new – movies like Monster House, Coraline, and Hotel Transylvania have long been popular with younger audiences. While some of these films became huge hits and gained dedicated fans, others have faded into obscurity. Now, Prime Video is giving viewers a chance to revisit an animated movie that offers a unique and imaginative take on the classic Frankenstein story.

The animated comedy Igor, directed by Tony Leondis, playfully reimagined the classic Frankenstein story when it was released in 2008. The film follows Igor, a hunchbacked assistant who dreams of being a mad scientist just like his boss, Dr. Glickenstein. It was MGM’s first fully computer-animated feature and their first animated movie in over a decade, following 1996’s All Dogs Go to Heaven 2. Set in the kingdom of Malaria, the story revolves around Igor entering the Evil Science Fair and accidentally creating a surprisingly kind monster. It began streaming on Prime Video on December 1st.

Igor Is an Underrated Gem

Released in 2008, the film Igor wasn’t a box office success, earning only $30 million despite costing $25 million to make. Critics and audiences weren’t impressed either, as reflected in its low scores on Rotten Tomatoes (40% from critics and 38% from viewers). However, it’s definitely worth watching now that it’s available on Prime Video.

This movie offers a fun, kid-appropriate reimagining of the Frankenstein story, complete with a wonderfully detailed and imaginative world. It’s set in Malaria, a gothic kingdom where villains thrive, eccentric scientists are in charge, and assistants like Igor aren’t treated very well. The movie’s visuals are inspired by Tim Burton’s style, creating a spooky yet vibrant atmosphere that feels like a classic monster movie. At its heart, it’s a heartwarming underdog story about an Igor who wants more out of life. Though made for kids, Igor includes plenty of humor and moments that adults will enjoy, and features a fantastic voice cast including John Cusack, Steve Buscemi (as a rabbit with a dark sense of humor), Jennifer Coolidge, Arsenio Hall, Christian Slater, and many others.

Despite not being a huge hit when it first came out, Igor is now a beloved cult classic among animation fans. It’s a darkly funny and incredibly imaginative movie that’s sure to entertain – you won’t be disappointed!

What’s New on Prime Video?

Prime Video added a bunch of new movies and shows on December 1st, including Igor. Families can now enjoy titles like Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and Penguins of Madagascar. For horror fans, there’s A Haunting in Venice, the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Zombieland. Other new additions include Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Love Actually, The Prodigy, and The Phoenician Scheme.
