Found footage horror films try to create a sense of unease, but most don’t actually cause viewers to stop watching. However, a movie from 2007 was so realistic and disturbing that it became notorious for being almost unwatchable. Now, if you’re feeling brave, you can stream it on Prime Video.
Although never officially banned by any government, the disturbing and realistic content of The Poughkeepsie Tapes – which depicts torture, brainwashing, and stalking – led MGM to shelve the film for almost ten years, earning it a reputation as a banned movie. Originally scheduled for release in February 2008, director John Erick Dowdle’s mockumentary was pulled after its premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival. It wasn’t widely available until 2014 when it was briefly released on DirecTV’s VOD service, only to be removed again. Eventually, it received a home release in 2017 and became more widely available on streaming platforms starting in 2020. Currently, those who dare to watch it can stream The Poughkeepsie Tapes on Prime Video, where it became available on April 1st.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes Is One of the Most Controversial Found Footage Horror Movies Ever
Be warned: The Poughkeepsie Tapes on Prime Video is a very disturbing movie and isn’t for all viewers. It’s a controversial film presented as a fake documentary that follows the investigation of a cruel serial killer over ten years. The movie combines interviews with police and the families of victims with the unsettling footage the killer himself recorded.
The movie stands out for its incredibly realistic use of the found footage style, resembling raw, low-quality VHS tapes. This creates a disturbing and authentic feel that initially led some viewers to believe it was real. However, its intensely realistic depiction of sadism and psychological abuse has proven too difficult for many to watch. The Poughkeepsie Tapes contains graphic and upsetting scenes of torture and humiliation, focusing particularly on the experiences of a character named Cheryl. The film doesn’t shy away from its disturbing subject matter, which has caused some viewers to stop watching, solidifying its reputation as a deeply unsettling and effective horror film within the found footage genre.
Other Horror Movies Now on Prime Video
If you’re not a fan of The Poughkeepsie Tapes, or if you’ve already watched it and want something else scary, Prime Video has a lot of new horror options. April brought additions like Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Lifeforce, Teen Wolf: The Movie, The Menu, and The Prodigy. You’ll also find classic horror films from the past, along with their remakes – including both versions of The Amityville Horror (1979 & 2005) and Child’s Play (1988 & 2019).
