Prime Video Just Added One of the Biggest Movies of 2024 (And a Sequel Is Coming Soon)

Now, you have the opportunity to watch one of the top-earning and highly successful films from 2024, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The year 2024 saw an impressive array of movies in both live-action and animation, with blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and Moana 2 standing out as some of the highest-grossing films domestically in the U.S. and globally. Though you can find these movies on Disney+, another big hit from 2024, Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, is now streaming only on Prime Video.

On July 25, 2025, the much-anticipated film adaptation of “Wicked” made its way to Amazon Prime Video following a four-month run on Peacock. Due to an agreement between Amazon and Universal Pictures, “Wicked” was accessible on Peacock for four months, will remain on Prime Video for the next ten months, and will subsequently return to Peacock. This news is thrilling for fans of the live-action version of the 2003 musical by Winnie Holtzman and Dana Fox, featuring Idina Menzel as Elphaba Thropp and Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda Upland.

In 2024, the first big-screen version of the popular stage musical “Wicked” premieres, with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande portraying Elphaba and Galinda respectively. This film was one of the most successful movies in the U.S. that year, ranking as the third highest-grossing film domestically and fifth worldwide, earning a total of $756.2 million globally on a production budget of $150 million. The sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” is slated for release in November 2025, with anticipation high that it will continue this impressive box office success.

The musical adaptation of “Wicked” earned $432.9 million domestically, but it didn’t surpass the box office revenues of “Inside Out 2” ($653 million) and the joint venture of “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($636.8 million). To fit the storyline for the screen, several alterations were made to the stage version. The musical “Wicked” delves into the backstories of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, originally based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” This narrative, which reinterprets L. Frank Baum’s original tale, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” from 1900 and its 1939 film adaptation starring Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, served as inspiration for the musical.

A significant portion of the narrative in “Wicked” remains untold, and this missing piece will be filled in a sequel called “Wicked: For Good“. The Wicked Witch of the West will reappear, but she may grapple with her identity as a witch while advocating for animal rights. Characters like Glinda, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), and even the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) will experience internal conflicts between their allegiance to Elphaba and their duties. The prequel, sequel, and post-Dorothy’s visit events of Oz will all be explored in “For Good“. It is set to premiere on November 21, 2025, so you can familiarize yourself with “Wicked” by watching it on Amazon Prime Video right now.
