Prime Video Just Added One of the Biggest Video Game Adaptations of All Time (And There’s a Sequel on the Way)

Adapting video games into movies remains a consistently popular trend in Hollywood, with mixed results. Over the last few decades, many iconic games like Silent Hill, Mortal Kombat, and Super Mario Bros. have made the jump to the big screen. While video game movies haven’t always been well-received, the genre has seen improvement lately, and a major new adaptation just launched on Prime Video.

The movie Minecraft was a huge hit in theaters, earning over $957 million worldwide – making it the second-highest-grossing film based on a video game, after The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, the film is now available to stream on Prime Video starting December 22nd. The story follows a group of unlikely heroes who are transported into the world of Minecraft through a strange portal, and they set off on a fantastical adventure through its unique, blocky landscape, guided by a surprising character named Steve.

A Minecraft Movie Successfully Brought the Creative Freedom of the Sandbox Game to the Big Screen

The movie based on the popular game Minecraft captures the game’s core themes of creativity, imagination, and adventure. It’s a lighthearted and fun family film that brings the spirit of Minecraft to life with a wildly imaginative story. A group of unlikely heroes finds themselves in the game’s world, the ‘Overworld,’ where they must use their creativity to survive and explore. The film visually resembles the game’s blocky style and includes many familiar elements that fans will appreciate. It’s a playful, quirky, and thoroughly enjoyable adventure – perfect for relaxing and having fun.

Critics weren’t thrilled with the movie, giving it a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes and criticizing its predictable and convoluted storyline, which struggled to appeal to both Minecraft fans and general moviegoers. However, A Minecraft Movie defied those reviews and became a huge success. Audiences loved it, giving it an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it broke box office records, achieving the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation. Warner Bros. is now hoping to build on this success.

A follow-up movie has been officially approved and is currently being made. The studio is keeping plot details under wraps for now, but director Hess will be back to direct and help write the script. The movie is expected to be released in theaters on July 23, 2027.

What’s New on Prime Video?

Prime Video is ending December with a few new additions, including A Minecraft Movie. While there aren’t many other releases planned for the last few days of the month, plenty of other films are already available to stream. Currently, you can also find movies like the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Zombieland, The Phoenician Scheme, and the new film Merv, starring Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel, on Prime Video.
