Prime Video Officially Announces Ad Free Service Phaseout

Like other streaming services, Prime Video is making significant changes to its platform. While Disney+ and Paramount+ are combining with competitors, Prime Video is currently choosing to eliminate one of its subscription options.

Starting March 13th, Prime Video began informing customers that they are discontinuing the ad-free plan. They’re replacing it with a new service called “Prime Video Ultra,” which will cost more.

Prime Video Ad Free will end on April 10, 2026, and be replaced by Prime Video Ultra. This new service will offer improved viewing options and cost $4.99 per month. Amazon is also offering a yearly plan for $45.99, which provides a 23% discount compared to the monthly cost.

What Changes With Prime Video Ultra?

Prime Video Ad Free let subscribers watch movies and shows without ads, and the new plan will continue to offer the same uninterrupted viewing experience.

This update will introduce several changes, including a new video format. Replacing the current service, it will now offer 4K Ultra HD, providing a picture four times sharper than standard HD.

The sound will be even better, with immersive Dolby Atmos for a cinematic experience.

The new plan will let you download more shows and movies to watch without an internet connection. While the existing Ad Free plan allowed offline downloads of 25 titles, the Ultra plan increases that to 100.

A standout feature of some streaming services is allowing multiple people to watch at the same time. However, Prime Video, even with its worldwide reach, won’t be offering this starting in 2026 – at least not right away.

I’m so excited about the new Prime Video Ultra plan! As someone with a big family, the fact that we can now stream on five devices at once is a game-changer. No more fighting over who gets to watch what – everyone can enjoy their favorite shows and movies at the same time!

Besides the new Prime Video Ultra plan, Amazon still offers the standard Prime Video benefit that comes with a Prime membership. This option now lets you download 50 movies and shows for offline viewing (previously 25) and stream on up to four devices at the same time (increased from three). Keep in mind that this plan includes ads and doesn’t offer 4K Ultra HD or Dolby Atmos sound.

Prime Video Has Become a Major Platform

As a film buff, I’ve noticed a lot of studios jumping into the streaming game lately, but Prime Video has actually been around for quite a while, much like Netflix. While they don’t have quite the same massive library as some others, they’ve really started delivering some fantastic movies and shows that appeal to pretty much everyone.

Amazon MGM Studios offers a wide range of entertainment, including popular original series like Fallout, Reacher, The Boys, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. They also have hit original movies such as Heads of State, Red One, Road House, and The Accountant 2. Beyond that, you can find exclusive live sports coverage of the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NASCAR, NWSL, and The Masters, plus a variety of licensed films and shows.

2026 is shaping up to be a big year for entertainment, with already-released hits like Nicole Kidman’s series Scarpetta, and even more exciting content on the way.

Prime Video Ultra is currently available for U.S. subscribers only.
