Science fiction has been popular on TV for years, but the competition between streaming services has been especially good for the genre. Netflix has delivered hits like Stranger Things and revived Black Mirror. Paramount+ has continued the Star Trek legacy with several new series, and Prime Video has consistently supported science fiction, recently announcing a highly anticipated reboot that fans will be excited about.
I’m so thrilled to hear that Prime Video is bringing Stargate back! Now that Amazon fully owns MGM, they’ve been figuring out which franchises to revive, and it’s amazing that Stargate made the cut – right after James Bond, apparently! As a longtime fan, I’ve been hoping for a new Stargate show for nearly ten years, and it sounds like there’s even more good news on the way!
New Stargate Series Finally Happening at Prime Video

Stargate fans have been waiting a long time for a new TV series, and the team behind it is truly impressive. Prime Video has chosen Martin Gero – known for his work on shows like Blindspot and the Quantum Leap reboot – to lead the project as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Notably, Gero is a Stargate veteran, having previously contributed to Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe. This new series marks his long-awaited return to the franchise after sixteen years.
In a recent statement, Gero shared that his first television job was twenty years ago on ‘Stargate: Atlantis,’ where he worked as a Story Editor for five years across all three ‘Stargate’ series. He credits the franchise with teaching him everything he knows about making television, calling it a fundamental part of his skillset. He’s excited that Amazon MGM Studios has chosen him to lead the franchise forward, and dedicates the continuation to longtime fans who have kept the spirit of ‘Stargate’ alive, while also welcoming new viewers to what he promises will be an amazing experience.
Nick Pepper, from Amazon MGM Studios, described ‘Stargate’ as a long-lasting and popular franchise that has consistently engaged viewers with its imaginative take on humanity’s role in the universe. He stated that Amazon is excited to collaborate with Martin, Tory, and Joby to create a new installment of ‘Stargate’ for Prime Video, building on the original series’ strengths while also moving the story forward in a compelling and emotionally impactful way.
The Stargate story began with Roland Emmerich’s 1994 film starring Kurt Russell, but it was the Stargate SG-1 TV series that really developed the idea of a wormhole allowing travel to other planets. That series ran for ten seasons with over 200 episodes and launched several spin-off shows. The most recent installment was the 2018 online miniseries, Stargate Origins.
The return of Stargate is sure to excite fans, but the fact that it’s coming to Prime Video is especially promising. Prime Video has become known for supporting science fiction and other genre shows, and this new series will likely have a much larger budget than the original shows on the Sci-Fi Channel.
