Great news for fans of The Assassin: Prime Video has officially renewed the show, starring Freddie Highmore and Keeley Hawes, for a second season.
This suspenseful thriller centers on Julie Green, a former assassin played by Keeley Hawes, who reconnects with her son, Edward (played by Freddie Highmore). Their reunion is disrupted when Julie’s past catches up to them, forcing them to go into hiding and embark on a dangerous journey together. As they try to build a relationship, they uncover a shadowy conspiracy that reveals an even larger threat.
Prime Video has renewed the thriller series The Assassin for a second season, and production is set to start later this year, according to Deadline. The show was created and written by Harry and Jack Williams, the team behind popular series like Fleabag, The Tourist, and The Widow. Stars Andrea Hawes, Freddie Highmore, Shalom Brune-Franklin, and Devon Terrell will all be returning for the new season.
Season 2 of The Assassin begins with Edward and Julie back from a failed trip to Europe, still dealing with the issues that drove them apart. Julie is attempting to build a normal life after being an assassin, including trying to date, while Edward’s honeymoon is interrupted when he must bring his mother, Julie, to Spain. Together, they’ll confront the country’s criminal network and attempt to repair their fractured relationship.
When asked about returning to their roles, Hawes expressed her excitement, saying she couldn’t wait to revisit Julie’s story. She was thrilled to work again with Freddie and the talented cast, and to explore Julie’s life and her complex connection with Edward further. She feels there are still many untold stories to reveal. Highmore then added his thoughts:
I’m really excited to work with the cast and crew again – it’s going to be a lot of fun! Harry and Jack have written another amazing story, and I’m thrilled to be acting alongside the wonderful Keeley once more.
Daisy Mount and Alex Mercer, executive producers for Two Brothers Pictures—the company making the series—shared their excitement about returning for the second season. They said it’s a pleasure to work with Keeley, Freddie, Shalom, and Devon again, and that they couldn’t let the characters have an easy ending. Viewers can expect plenty of surprises and unexpected events in the new season, mirroring the complex lives of the characters.
While there’s no official release date yet, season 2 of the thrilling series could arrive in 2027, as production is already happening. You can currently stream season 1, The Assassin, on AMC+ in the United States.
