Prime Video Revives Stargate Franchise With New Original Series

Prime Video is bringing back the classic sci-fi series, Stargate. It all began with the 1994 film Stargate, an adventurous story about a device that enables instant travel through space. Starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, the movie earned nearly $200 million and launched a long-lasting and beloved franchise.

The world of Stargate has expanded over the last thirty years with many different shows and movies. While several versions exist, Stargate SG-1, the TV series that aired from 1997 to 2007, is probably the most popular. It was nominated for nine Emmy Awards and built a dedicated following. After a brief return in 2018, it now appears Stargate is making a significant comeback.

Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with a new Stargate series. The show, described as a fresh start for the popular science fiction franchise, will be available to stream on Prime Video in over 240 countries. Martin Gero, who previously worked on Stargate Atlantis in 2004, is creating the series and says he’s been a longtime fan of the saga.

Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

The creative team for the new show has been confirmed, though casting and production details will be announced later. Martin Gero, the creator of the NBC series Blindspot, will be an executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Dean Devlin, who wrote the 1994 film, and Roland Emmerich, the director and co-writer of Stargate, will also serve as executive producers.

Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures (known for their work on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) are executive producers on the project. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who were central to the Stargate franchise with shows like SG-1 and Atlantis, will serve as consulting producers. Nick Pepper, Head of US Streaming TV Development at Amazon MGM Studios, also expressed his enthusiasm about the announcement.

For decades, Stargate has been a popular and memorable franchise, known for its imaginative stories about humanity’s role in the universe. We’re excited to team up with Martin, Tory, and Joby to create a new chapter of Stargate for Prime Video viewers around the world. This new series will both celebrate the original show’s history and take the story in a bold, emotionally powerful direction.
