Prime Video’s 8-Part William Gibson Sci-Fi Series Could Be Resurrected Thanks To Apple TV’s New Cyberpunk Masterpiece Adaptation

A popular sci-fi series on Prime Video was unexpectedly cancelled after only one season, which was a real loss of potential. However, an upcoming cyberpunk adaptation on Apple TV could generate enough renewed interest to bring the show back. The rise of streaming services has given us many excellent sci-fi shows, and this could be the catalyst for a revival.

Shows like The Expanse, Foundation, and Andor offer compelling science fiction. Amazon Prime Video has a strong selection of sci-fi series, though I was disappointed when one of my favorites—based on a great book by William Gibson—was cancelled after its first season. However, there’s a chance it might get a new life with an upcoming show on Apple TV.

Prime Video’s Cyberpunk Series Did Not Deserve To Be Cancelled After 1 Season

William Gibson is a celebrated science fiction author, so I was really looking forward to Prime Video’s take on his novel, The Peripheral. The show features Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher and Jack Reynor as her brother, Burton. This cyberpunk series debuted on October 21, 2022, with the first two episodes available at once. All eight episodes of The Peripheral are now available to stream on Prime Video.

The Peripheral is a highly ambitious science fiction series, and its first season excels at creating a detailed and believable world. The show draws viewers in as Flynne uses virtual reality to experience a technologically advanced future, where she discovers the ‘Jackpot’ – a devastating event that threatens to destroy her present and shapes the future she’s beginning to understand.

With its high-tech setting, impressive visuals, and a bleak vision of the future controlled by powerful corporations, The Peripheral was a treat for fans of cyberpunk. The show featured exciting action and a strong cast. Though it was originally renewed for a second season in February 2023, Prime Video ultimately cancelled it due to the Hollywood strikes of 2023, bringing the series to an end.

Apple TV’s New William Gibson Series Could Be What Resurrects The Peripheral

Despite being cancelled three years ago, The Peripheral is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. According to data from FlixPatrol, the show is currently trending on Prime Video in several countries, even reaching the Top Ten list. It’s currently number one in Nigeria and second in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and South Africa.

The show is gaining popularity again at just the right moment, and the new Apple TV series could spark renewed interest in a similar show on Prime Video. William Gibson’s Neuromancer is considered the definitive cyberpunk story, influencing everything that followed, including Gibson’s own The Peripheral. An adaptation of The Peripheral is now available on Apple TV, a streaming service well-known for its science fiction successes like Severance, Silo, Foundation, and others.

Given the popularity of science fiction shows on Apple TV+ and the importance of Neuromancer as the original cyberpunk novel, a successful adaptation seems inevitable. If the Neuromancer series lives up to expectations, it could pave the way for Prime Video to revive The Peripheral, capitalizing on the current cyberpunk trend and the shared connection to author William Gibson.
