Prime Video’s miniseries Mad Dogs starts with a shocking reveal and quickly grabs your attention. Originally based on a British series from 2011-2013, Mad Dogs came to the streaming service in 2015. Critics generally liked it, giving it a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers scored it even higher at 82%. It also has a 7.5/10 rating on IMDb. Despite these positive numbers, Amazon Prime Video canceled the show after one season. Still, many consider it one of the most engaging mystery series of the 2010s.
This Is Not Your Average Mystery Whodunit
The series Mad Dogs begins with a lot of humor, largely thanks to Steve Zahn’s performance. Romani Malco also brings his comedic timing to the show, while Ben Chaplin and Michael Imperioli provide a dramatic core. The story starts with a straightforward idea: Cobi, Lex, Gus, and Joel travel to beautiful Belize at the invitation of a friend named Milo, hoping for a fun getaway.
The group’s vacation quickly turns into a nightmare when someone is murdered. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect, and they’re trapped in Belize. They soon discover the victim was involved in illegal activities, and a dangerous person known as Jesus begins to threaten them. Unable to escape the country, the friends must find a way to survive, and they realize their best hope lies in confronting the danger head-on.
The show starts like a funny thriller, similar to The White Lotus with its story of vacationers and a sudden death. But as it goes on, the mood shifts and becomes much more disturbing. By the end, Mad Dogs turns genuinely sinister, tackling difficult themes and not shying away from uncomfortable situations. Be warned: some scenes might make you squirm!
It’s Hard to Find a Better Ensemble Cast Than the One in ‘Mad Dogs’
The trailer offers just a glimpse of how unique and multi-layered the series is, with a strong focus on its memorable characters. Steve Zahn, known for his reliable performances, delivers even the wittiest lines with depth, even during the show’s most intense scenes. While usually a comedic actor, Malco showcases his dramatic talent here. Imperioli stands out as a particularly compelling character – a man struggling to survive and openly displaying his frustration. Chaplin, who originally played this role in the British series, is excellent as the group’s level-headed and practical leader. The show also features strong performances from supporting actors Ted Levine, Phil Davis, Allison Tolman, and Maria Botto.

The strength of Mad Dogs lies in how well the actors play off each other, which keeps the series engaging from beginning to end. The 2010s saw a lot of TV shows get remade, including titles like Lost in Space, V, and The Twilight Zone. But many of these remakes didn’t gain much attention. Mad Dogs is another one of those forgotten series – it’s no longer available on streaming services, despite being an original production. Currently, you can only rent or buy it online. Still, it’s a show worth checking out.
