Prime Video’s new thriller series has the potential to run for many years, given the extensive source material it’s based on. However, one significant challenge could prevent it from reaching its full potential. Adapting popular book series can be very successful for streaming services, even when some of the books have already been made into movies or TV shows. For example, Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry have both previously played the character Alex Cross, from James Patterson’s novels, in film adaptations. Despite these prior attempts, Prime Video’s new series, Cross, has become a hit.
The TV series Reacher, based on Lee Child’s books, has been a big success with both critics and viewers, despite Tom Cruise having already starred in two Jack Reacher movies in the 2010s. With this in mind, the mystery series Scarpetta, starring Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, seemed like a guaranteed hit. Based on Patricia Cornwell’s popular thriller novels, Scarpetta featured Kidman as the complex and gifted forensic pathologist, and Curtis as her strong-willed sister Dorothy.
There Are 29 Scarpetta Novels For Prime’s Nicole Kidman Show To Adapt

Patricia Cornwell’s popular Scarpetta series centers around the complex relationship between Scarpetta and her sister, skillfully blending the graphic details of her murder investigations with her personal family struggles. The Prime Video adaptation of Scarpetta proved to be a hit for the streaming platform, using a dual timeline approach featuring both a young and older version of the lead character. The first season adapted Cornwell’s 1990s novel Postmortem for the past storyline and drew from her 2021 novel Autopsy for the present-day narrative.
The show initially stood out by attempting to adapt two novels at once, setting it apart from series like Reacher and Cross. Unfortunately, the psychological thriller aspect proved too ambitious. While there’s plenty of source material with 29 novels available, the show first needs to deliver a story worthy of Patricia Cornwell’s books. Sadly, the first season was a confusing mix of tones, with elements like crashing spaceships, artificial intelligence, and a strange cult leader making the plot feel over-the-top and far removed from the realistic feel of the novels.
Scarpetta Seriously Needs To Fix Season 1’s Problems For The Crime Thriller To Last

The first season of Reacher received very positive reviews, earning a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Scarpetta, however, didn’t fare as well, with a score of only 60% from critics and an even lower audience score. Although Scarpetta has been renewed for a second season, it needs significant improvement to become as popular as Reacher or Cross, both of which are successful adaptations of popular book series. The show boasts a talented cast including Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, and Simon Baker, suggesting it has the potential to succeed.
The future of the Scarpetta series depends on whether the second season is a significant improvement over the first, which was messy and didn’t quite work. To succeed, Prime Video needs to decide if it should simplify the storytelling like many popular thrillers on Netflix, or refine the complex, back-and-forth timeline approach it already tried. Ultimately, the show has a lot of work to do to live up to its potential.
