The show first launched on Prime Video in 2019 and quickly gained popularity. Its initial success led to it being expanded from a limited series into a full series.
After three years, Good Omens is back for its final season, concluding with a special 90-minute episode. However, ahead of its May 13th release, the show unexpectedly received the lowest score of any season on Rotten Tomatoes.
Season 3 has received a lukewarm response from critics, earning a 67% score based on nine reviews. This score may change as more reviews come in after the season’s release. It’s lower than the scores of the previous seasons: Season 1 received an 85% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating, and Season 2 scored even higher at 88%. An audience score for Season 3 isn’t available yet.
What Are Critics Saying About Good Omens Season 3?
The show has been well-received, with praise for its writing, the performances of Michael Sheen and David Tennant, and the developing romantic connection between their characters. However, despite a three-year delay, some critics felt the script wasn’t fully developed and even the stars couldn’t elevate it. Originally renewed for a third season, the show’s final installment was shortened to just one episode.
Tom Percival of Metro.co.uk wasn’t impressed with Good Omens 3, calling it largely disappointing despite the cast and crew’s best efforts. He didn’t enjoy watching it, and his main complaint is that the season tries to do too much, preventing the interesting premise from fully developing.
Amelia Harvey from That Hashtag Show wasn’t impressed with the finale either, noting it had promise but felt incredibly rushed. She compared the experience to ‘eating a sandwich full of air,’ meaning it had good ideas but ultimately didn’t deliver and felt like a waste of time.
Nick Bythrow of ScreenRant offered a generally positive review, but noted that season 3 of Good Omens felt rushed and could have benefited from further refinement. Luke Y. Thompson from Mortal Cinema acknowledged the storyline wasn’t perfect, but praised David Tennant and Michael Sheen’s performances, stating they elevated the material.
Dais Johnson of Inverse believes Season 3 delivered a satisfying conclusion for both the show and its fans. While acknowledging it might be a controversial finale, Johnson suggests it could still rank among the best series endings in recent memory.
What Happens in Good Omens Season 3?
The show has built a romantic connection between the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley over time. In the Season 2 finale, Crowley finally told Aziraphale how he felt, but Aziraphale chose to accept an offer to return to Heaven instead of running away with Crowley.
Season 3 follows the events as preparations for the Second Coming of Christ are underway. At the same time, Crowley is dealing with heartbreak in Soho. When Heaven misplaces the new Messiah, Aziraphale and Crowley are forced to team up once more, rekindling their connection as they search for Him together.
Good Omens premieres on Prime Video on May 13.
