People are still arguing about whether The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a great fantasy show or a disappointing take on Tolkien’s world – and that debate will likely continue online forever. But with Season 3 of Rings of Power still far off and The Wheel of Time canceled, Prime Video is currently missing a big fantasy series. Luckily, they’ve just released a new high-fantasy action show that’s already proving popular. While it hasn’t been promoted as heavily as The Rings of Power or The Wheel of Time, fantasy fans should definitely check out The Mighty Nein.
The new series, The Mighty Nein, is now available on Prime Video and is quickly becoming a popular choice for viewers. It’s currently the second most-watched show on the platform, just behind Season 1 of Fallout, which fans are revisiting before the new season arrives in December. Like other Prime Video adaptations such as The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, The Mighty Nein is released in episodes, but it’s based on a different kind of source material – it doesn’t come from a well-known book series.
Don’t worry, The Mighty Nein isn’t a heavy metal band! It’s an animated series based on the second campaign of the popular Dungeons & Dragons streaming show, Critical Role. The show features a group of voice actors – including Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham – who previously created the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina. The Mighty Nein is a follow-up of sorts, with the same cast playing new characters within the same fantasy world. Essentially, it’s like they’re continuing the story with a different group of heroes, just as they did during their second D&D game. Here’s what the show is about:
When a magical artifact called The Beacon is stolen by dangerous people, a team of unlikely heroes – each with their own troubled pasts – must unite to protect their world and prevent it from being destroyed.
‘The Mighty Nein’ Is The Highest of High Fantasy Shows

Prime Video
If the plot sounds like a typical fantasy adventure, that’s because it is! Adapted from a Dungeons & Dragons game, the story is filled with classic fantasy elements – imaginative creatures and races are everywhere. However, it’s unique because it was created by a group of voice actors with backgrounds in animation, video games, and anime, giving it a playful, witty, and unconventional style.
The successful style of The Legend of Vox Machina is carrying over to The Mighty Nein. The first season of The Mighty Nein has earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences closely following, giving it a 95% rating. One viewer shared their excitement after the initial episodes, saying, “Even though the first three episodes mainly set the stage for what’s to come, they’ve already captivated me and left me eager for more. I’m hoping the rest of the season continues to deliver!”
