Prime Video’s New Movie With Batman & Star Wars Franchise Stars Is an Instant Hit (Despite Bad Reviews)

With the holidays here, everyone’s getting ready to watch Christmas movies! While people have their tried-and-true favorites, new holiday films come out each year hoping to become classics. This December, theaters don’t have many big Christmas releases, but streaming services are offering plenty of options. One standout new title is Oh. What. Fun., which features a cast of well-known actors. Although it hasn’t received rave reviews, the movie is proving popular on Prime Video.

The new movie Oh. What. Fun. is currently the seventh most popular title on Amazon Prime Video, according to the streaming tracker FlixPatrol. It started streaming on December 3rd and has quickly become a hit with viewers. However, professional critics haven’t been kind, giving it a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, audiences seem to dislike it even more, with a score of just 26%.

What Is Oh. What. Fun. About?

The holiday comedy Oh. What. Fun. stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Claire Clauster, a dedicated mother who always makes Christmas extra special for her family. When she’s accidentally left behind while they attend a Christmas show, Claire decides to take a break from tradition and go on her own adventure. The film also features Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary, and Dominic Sessa as members of Claire’s family, who try to locate her after she sets off on her unexpected journey.

Despite a promising idea and a talented cast, the new movie Oh. What. Fun. doesn’t seem likely to become a beloved holiday tradition. Many reviews point to a weak and underdeveloped script that doesn’t allow the actors to fully showcase their skills. While the film deserves credit for wanting to recognize the hard work of mothers during the holidays, it ultimately doesn’t quite succeed. This is especially disappointing considering the director, Michael Showalter, has made several critically acclaimed films, including the Oscar-nominated The Big Sick and Spoiler Alert. He’s proven he can effectively combine comedy with heartfelt emotion, making it a shame this Christmas movie didn’t come together as well.

It’s not surprising that Oh. What. Fun. became a popular streaming movie despite some initial negative buzz. Its release during the busy holiday season was perfectly timed, and the story of someone struggling to create the perfect Christmas resonates with many viewers looking for festive entertainment. Plus, the film boasts a well-known cast – with stars like Pfeiffer, Jones, and Leary – which gives it an advantage over other Christmas movies available on Prime Video. People are simply more likely to watch something with familiar faces.

With so many movies competing for attention in theaters, Oh. What. Fun. likely wouldn’t have stood out. Releasing it directly on streaming was a good decision, giving it a better chance to find viewers. Considering the mixed reviews, it would have been difficult to attract audiences to see it in cinemas. It’s much easier for people to watch it at home with just a click. While it’s a shame the movie didn’t quite live up to expectations, Amazon Prime Video will probably see strong viewership numbers, and it could become a yearly holiday tradition for some.
