Prime Video’s New Sci-Fi Series Borrows A Page From The Expanse’s Missing Seasons

Even though The Expanse finished its run a few years ago, a new show called The Captive’s War is continuing one of its most captivating stories. The Expanse itself was a highly praised science fiction series, spanning six seasons and airing on both SyFy and Prime Video, and it was based on the novels by James S.A. Corey.

The science fiction series The Expanse took place in the future, after humans had settled throughout our solar system. The show followed the complex relationship between the government of Mars and the United Nations, which controlled Earth and Luna. Over time, The Expanse evolved from a tense political drama into a grand, large-scale space adventure.

The Captive’s War’s Villains Share Common Traits With The Expanse’s Missing Final Villains

As the name suggests, The Expanse continually broadened its scope with each season, adding new characters and exploring more of its imagined world. Unfortunately, because the show ended after six seasons, it wasn’t able to fully adapt the storyline from the ‘Dark Gods’ books.

I remember when the showrunners were planning to introduce a truly powerful alien enemy – they would have been the first real extraterrestrial villains in The Expanse. It’s interesting because, even though people often compared the show to Star Trek, one big difference early on was that all the antagonists were human. That all changed with the introduction of the ‘Dark Gods’, which finally brought in a non-human threat.

Good news for fans who weren’t ready to leave the universe of The Expanse: in 2024, the authors began a new series of stories set in that same world. The release of their novel, The Mercy of Gods, launched The Captive’s War series, which opens with a human colony being attacked by a mysterious and powerful alien empire called the Carryx – a collective intelligence that operates as one.

The Captive’s War May Spark Further Demand To Finish Adapting The Expanse

Fans have drawn comparisons between The Mercy of Gods and thought-provoking science fiction like Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness. This new novel builds on the world of The Expanse, and a planned TV series adaptation is expected to feel like a continuation of that show, even bringing back many of the same people who worked on it.

Fans of The Expanse will be pleased to know that The Captive’s War, both in book and TV form, will at last fully reveal the alien threat hinted at throughout the original series. This allows The Captive’s War to expand the established universe of The Expanse while staying true to the spirit of what fans already love.
