Prime Video has some great detective shows, but their next series promises to be something truly different. Most people know Spider-Man and his classic costume, but the new series, Spider-Noir, reimagines him as a hard-boiled detective in a film-noir style, giving him a completely fresh appearance and feel.
I’m really excited about Spider-Noir! It’s Spider-Man, but reimagined as a detective in a 1930s setting, and it’s honestly one of the coolest takes on the character I’ve seen. I’m hoping the new Prime Video show captures that classic noir feel – it could really bring that whole genre back into the spotlight, which I think is long overdue!
How Spider-Noir Ties Into Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Even with changes to the story and the introduction of many different universes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse added official events to the increasingly complicated history of Spider-Man, a result of the franchise exploring the multiverse. The movie Into the Spider-Verse first showed us Spider-Noir, a hard-boiled detective version of Spider-Man, as one of the alternate Spider-People brought into Miles Morales’ world.
Spider-Noir was a unique addition to the Spider-Verse, bringing a film noir style to the world of superheroes. Even though he wasn’t on screen for long in Into the Spider-Verse, his memorable voice-over and quirky habit of playing with a Rubik’s Cube made him a standout character. While funny, Spider-Noir offered more than just laughs, proving that Spider-Man could be something completely different.
As Miles learns the ropes of being a superhero, Spider-Noir offers a stark contrast – he’s a cynical, battle-hardened vigilante who’s seen it all, and often expresses his weariness. By bringing a darker, more serious tone to the Spider-Verse, Spider-Noir demonstrates the limitless potential of the franchise.
Spider-Noir Has One Of The Most Exciting Casts In A Superhero Show
Nicolas Cage, who famously voiced Spider-Noir in the animated film Into the Spider-Verse, is returning to the role for the new Spider-Noir TV series. He brings a unique and quirky energy to the character, making it hard to picture anyone else playing him. Producer Phil Lord even told Collider that Nicolas Cage has a brilliantly unsettling vision for how to play Spider-Man.
Nicolas Cage isn’t the only big name joining the cast of Spider-Noir. So far, at least five Marvel villains have been confirmed, and the actors need to capture the film’s darker, more serious mood. Brendan Gleeson, who plays the powerful Silvermane, is well-suited for this – he’s known for portraying tough, complicated characters often found in film-noir stories.
The new series Spider-Noir features a talented cast including Lamorne Morris, known for his work on Fargo, Jack Huston, who previously played a hitman in Boardwalk Empire and is now taking on the villainous Sandman, and Li Jun Li, who portrayed a character in Babylon inspired by silent film star Anna May Wong. Their collective experience with intense and dramatic roles makes this superhero show’s cast particularly promising.
You’ll Probably Have To Watch Spider-Noir Twice
Many episodes of the Spider-Verse benefit from watching them twice, and if Spider-Noir lives up to its potential, it will likely be even more enjoyable on a second viewing. This isn’t just because of hidden details viewers might spot. Spider-Noir is groundbreaking for television by being presented in both black and white and color.
Nicolas Cage shared with Esquire Magazine that he hopes the black and white version of the show will encourage viewers to explore older films and appreciate them as an art form. Because streaming allows for more creative freedom, the distinct style of Spider-Noir likely means fans will want to watch both the color and black and white versions, essentially viewing the show twice.
