Prime’s Batman Show Brings Back One Of The Coolest Batsuits In DC History

Batman is known for having one of the most recognizable looks in superhero history. Given his focus on planning, preparation, and using gadgets, it’s not surprising he has a variety of different costumes and specialized suits. Fans often have a favorite Bat-suit tied to a memorable moment from a comic book, TV show, or movie. While many suits are popular, some stand out as truly iconic, and one of the most beloved recently received a nice tribute in the newest Batman TV series.

As a huge Batman fan, I’m really enjoying the new Bat-Fam animated series on Amazon Prime Video. It’s a spin-off from the adorable Merry Little Batman movie we got last year – remember how Damian Wayne basically became ‘Little Batman’ to protect everything while Bruce was gone? This series really expands on their world, and it’s fun seeing Bruce, Damian, and Alfred trying to adjust to some new faces at Wayne Manor, all while still fighting crime. Just recently, in Episode 3, Damian and Alfred went on a mission that definitely called for some serious upgrades to their gear – it was a great episode!

In the third episode of Bat-Fam, titled “90 is the New 80”, Damian doesn’t listen to Batman and takes a big risk. He enlists Alfred Pennyworth to help him find and stop the Mad Hatter. Knowing Alfred isn’t able to physically fight crime, they decide to use Batman’s Exoframe Batsuit to get the job done!

Bat-Fam Acknowledges the Rich History of Batman’s Exoframe Suit

The Exoframe Batsuit—also known as the Powered Batsuit or Exo-Suit—first appeared in Frank Miller’s influential 1986 comic, The Dark Knight Returns. It’s a powerful, mechanically-enhanced armor that Bruce Wayne created to fight Superman. Using the suit’s strength and protection, along with weapons made from Kryptonite, Batman was able to overpower Superman in their battle, bringing the Man of Steel to his knees. However, the suit put a tremendous strain on Bruce Wayne’s aging heart, and he seemingly died from a heart attack before the fight could conclude.

Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns is now a legendary Batman story, and the powerful Exoframe Batsuit from it is just as famous. Miller was the first to portray Batman as a wealthy industrialist who, like Iron Man, uses his fortune to develop advanced armor. This allows him to fight opponents with superpowers, but it’s not just about technology; the conflict between Batman and Superman in The Dark Knight Returns is intensely personal and politically charged. Superman is trying to stop Bruce Wayne’s radical campaign in Gotham, which has caught the attention – and disapproval – of the US government. Despite Miller’s somewhat rough art style, the image of Batman in the exo-armor remains incredibly memorable.

In his film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder brought the iconic Exoframe Batsuit from the comics to life. The movie, heavily inspired by Frank Miller’s work, featured Ben Affleck as Batman wearing the powerful Exoframe suit to fight Superman, after Lex Luthor tricked the two heroes into battling each other. Despite criticisms of the film, many viewers praised Snyder’s recreation of The Dark Knight Returns and considered Ben Affleck’s Exoframe suit a standout costume.

Despite being a controversial and famously divisive film, Batman v Superman brought the unique Exoframe suit to the attention of many viewers. It was a fun nod to fans – and a playful moment – to see Alfred briefly wearing the suit.
