Primitive War – REVIEW

The success of recent Jurassic Park movies like Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom proves people still love dinosaurs. Now, Primitive War enters the scene with a unique sci-fi take, blending prehistoric creatures with a retro aesthetic.

The film begins in Vietnam in 1968 with a mission involving Green Berets that quickly fails, and the soldiers go missing. Colonel Jericho (Jeremy Piven, clearly enjoying his over-the-top role) then assembles a special team – the Vulture Squad – to find them. This elite group, though not always convincingly portrayed as soldiers, is led by the hardened Sgt. Baker (Ryan Kwanten).

Colonel Jericho and his squad have no idea that a group of Soviet agents have secretly built a device – a sort of dinosaur-reviving particle accelerator – which has brought dinosaurs back to life. These dinosaurs are now rampaging around, causing gruesome chaos and, unfortunately for the soldiers, are treating them as lunch. It’s a wildly silly premise, but the movie is a lot of fun, particularly as the number of soldiers dwindles and they desperately fight off wave after wave of attacking dinosaurs.

However, Primitive War has some flaws. While director Luke Sparke, who also handled the visual effects, clearly put in a lot of effort, the dinosaurs don’t look as realistic as those in the Jurassic movies, which had much larger budgets. The CGI is noticeable during daytime scenes, but blends in better at night, though the dinosaurs sometimes withstand gunfire a little too easily.

This movie takes the intensity up a notch with more gore and strong language, similar to ‘Predator’. Like ‘Kong: Skull Island’ (2017), it features a fantastic soundtrack, prominently using classic rock like Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Fortunate Son’ – a song that instantly makes any action film better.
