I was really bummed to hear that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is officially cancelled. It’s been in development for over five years, and they even restarted it with a new team at Ubisoft Montreal! Ubisoft didn’t say much about why they pulled the plug on it (or five other projects), but the developers explained on Twitter that they just couldn’t get it to the quality we fans deserve. It’s disappointing, but I appreciate them being honest about it.
Although the project showed promise, we couldn’t deliver the quality our users expect. Continuing would have taken too much time and money, and we didn’t want to release a final product that didn’t live up to the initial vision.
Ubisoft Montreal reassured fans that they still care a lot about the game world and its history, and that they aren’t necessarily abandoning the series.
The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has faced numerous challenges since its announcement, particularly due to disappointing initial graphics. After several delays, development moved to Ubisoft Montreal, where the game was essentially rebuilt from the ground up. Although no gameplay footage has been shown yet, the studio has indicated significant changes to the character Farah, and promised redesigned levels and combat systems.
Despite promises of updates this year, we haven’t heard much new about the game for quite some time. Following recent changes at Ubisoft, where games like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six are currently the main focus, it’s unlikely we’ll see a large-scale new game or even a remake in the near future.
Luckily, fans have both The Rogue Prince of Persia, created by the team behind Dead Cells, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a 2.5D Metroidvania game developed by Ubisoft Montpellier.
