Prince William and Kate Middleton’s kids are royally tuned into their emotions.
Prince William, who shares three children – 12-year-old Prince George, 10-year-old Princess Charlotte, and 7-year-old Prince Louis – with Kate, recently discussed how comfortable his children are with sharing their feelings.
Prince William recently shared that his three children often talk about their feelings, and sometimes it’s a lot! He jokingly mentioned this during a BBC Radio 1 panel discussion on mental health on February 18th, adding that he appreciates hearing all the details – he finds it wonderful.
This open communication helps William understand how his children are feeling, but it also makes him want to fix their issues—something he’s actively working to avoid.
William explained that he struggles with the feeling that everything needs to be fixed, especially for others. He often has to remind himself that it’s okay not to solve every problem, and that simply listening and accepting people’s feelings and opinions is what truly matters.
He explained that you’ll experience a wide range of feelings, from difficult ones to incredibly positive ones, and everything in between.
Honestly, seeing how people dealt with things like anxiety and depression before William – like, what did our grandparents do? – has been a total game-changer for understanding his struggles. It’s like, knowing the history helps me really get what he’s going through, and it’s been so insightful to watch him work through it all.
He explained that his experiences with mental health have helped him realize how past generations struggled to discuss these issues. He believes understanding that history is key to understanding where we are today.
He explained that people who lived through the World Wars often didn’t discuss their feelings. They experienced terrible things, and likely felt that talking about it wouldn’t have made a difference. As a result, that generation generally kept their emotions private, perhaps without even realizing it.

The father of three admitted that previous generations haven’t always dealt with mental health in a healthy way, but he emphasized that today’s parents have a responsibility to teach their children how to cope with challenges in a better way.
He explained that this pattern often continues unintentionally, as each generation simply repeats what they’ve always known. But he stressed the need to stop this cycle, emphasizing that openly discussing feelings is crucial instead of suppressing them.
He noted that while there’s still much work to be done in improving mental health, understanding our progress so far is essential for moving forward effectively.
