The 2026 sci-fi hit, Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, has been a major success in theaters, earning over $160 million in the US and nearly $320 million worldwide. However, the film’s author, Andy Weir, recently apologized on social media to the Star Trek franchise and executive producer Alex Kurtzman for an unspecified issue.
Author Andy Weir recently explained on a podcast that he believes the Star Trek franchise hasn’t been handled well. He also shared that Paramount rejected a Star Trek idea he pitched. Following the podcast, Weir publicly apologized to Alex Kurtzman via social media. He felt his comments on the podcast were edited to sound more sensational than intended and wanted to emphasize his personal respect for Kurtzman and his positive character.

Weir apologized, explaining he intended a joke, but realizes his comments came across as disrespectful and hurtful. He also said his frustrated remark about a rejected pitch – saying something along the lines of “tough luck to them” – seemed harsher when taken out of context. He admitted he tends to be direct and hadn’t considered the impact of his words, as it had been a long time since the media paid attention to his opinions. He joked that he’d soon return to writing novels where he wouldn’t be under scrutiny. He ended by offering to discuss the situation further, even if it meant receiving criticism, and invited people to call or video chat with him.
Both Project Hail Mary and Star Trek are currently getting a lot of attention. Project Hail Mary has been a huge success in theaters, and with its popularity, a sequel is a real possibility. However, the future of Star Trek is less certain. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will conclude after its second season, and there are currently no new movies or shows planned. The recent merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery may also mean fans will have to wait and see what happens before Star Trek‘s future is decided.
